Stripe Tax vs Avalara 2026: 0.5% per Sale or $799 per State
Stripe Tax vs Avalara for SaaS in 2026: Stripe Tax Basic costs $2,000 a year at $1M revenue, Avalara $3,995 with filing; at $10M the filing plans land within $680.

For a SaaS company near $1M of revenue that only needs tax calculated, Stripe Tax Basic is cheaper: about $2,000 a year in our scenario, against $3,995 for Avalara Core Compliance. Once returns must be filed too, Avalara is cheaper at $1M, and at $10M the two filing plans land within $680 a year of each other. Avalara's per-state fee wins as revenue in each registered state grows.
The prices were read on Stripe Tax pricing, Stripe's Tax pricing help article and Avalara's sales tax plans page on October 21, 2026. Every yearly total below is our arithmetic on those printed prices and on the scenario assumptions stated with each table.
Toolradar data: among the 21 tax software tools with a comparable monthly entry price on Toolradar's tax software statistics page, the median entry plan is $24.92 a month as of October 21, 2026, across 42 tools tracked. Avalara's cheapest published plan is $69 per state per month, so a sales tax engine costs a multiple of the category median before the second state. Toolradar is the software directory we run.
The two price models at a glance
| Read October 21, 2026 | What it covers | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Stripe Tax Basic, no-code | Calculation and collection on Stripe Billing, Checkout, Invoicing and Payment Links | 0.5% of volume where you are registered, no recurring fee |
| Stripe Tax Basic, API | Same, through Stripe's tax APIs or any processor | 50¢ per transaction, 10 calculation calls included, then 5¢ each |
| Stripe Tax Complete | Adds registrations and filings | $90, $430, $1,000 or $1,500 a month on a 1-year contract |
| Avalara Core Compliance | AvaTax calculation, Managed Returns filing and remittance, nexus monitoring, exemptions | $79 per state a month, or $799 per state a year |
| Avalara Core Compliance + SST | The same plus state-funded services in up to 25 states for qualifying sellers | $69 per state a month, or $699 per state a year |
| Avalara Custom | Multi-entity and complex needs, for revenue of $50M or more | Quote-only |
The models charge for different things. Stripe charges on sales volume or on transactions, so the bill grows with revenue. Avalara Select charges per state where you collect, so the bill grows with your nexus footprint and stays flat as revenue in those states grows. Avalara's Select plans are for companies under $50M of annual revenue.
Which plans include filing?
Stripe Tax Basic calculates and collects tax only. It does not register you or file returns, so a company on Basic still files each state itself or pays a partner. That makes Basic a fair comparison only against doing filing in-house.
Stripe Tax Complete adds registrations and filings, with tier limits. The $90 tier includes 2 registrations and 4 filings a year and 200 transactions a month; the $430 tier, 4 registrations, 12 filings and 1,000 transactions; the $1,000 tier, 6 registrations, 20 filings and 2,500 transactions; the $1,500 tier, 10 registrations, 32 filings and 5,000 transactions. US filings beyond the tier cost $55 each, and extra US registrations $150 each.
Avalara Core Compliance includes Managed Returns, which prepares, files and remits returns in each state and handles notices. Registration is a separate published service at $403 per location. So the like-for-like comparison is Stripe Tax Complete against Avalara Core Compliance, with Stripe Tax Basic shown for the company that files on its own.
What a $1M SaaS company pays
The scenario: $1M of annual revenue billed through Stripe Billing, an average invoice of $100, which is about 833 invoices a month by our division, already registered and filing quarterly in 5 states, with 40% of revenue in those states. Annual billing is used for Avalara, and Stripe Complete is its 1-year contract.
| Smaller company | Includes filing | Year, our arithmetic |
|---|---|---|
| Stripe Tax Basic, no-code | No | $2,000 |
| Avalara Core Compliance + SST, if you qualify | Yes | $3,495 |
| Avalara Core Compliance | Yes | $3,995 |
| Stripe Tax Complete, $430 tier plus 8 extra filings | Yes | $5,600 |
Basic's $2,000 is 0.5% of the $400,000 billed in registered states; Stripe counts the full amount including the tax it adds, so the real figure runs slightly higher. Avalara's total is 5 states at the annual price. Stripe Complete needs 20 filings a year for 5 quarterly states, so the cheapest route is the $430 tier with 8 filings over its limit.
At this size, a company that files on its own saves $1,995 a year with Stripe Tax Basic, and a company that wants filing done saves $1,605 with Avalara Core Compliance over Stripe Tax Complete. The decision is whether quarterly filing in 5 states is worth that much of a controller's time.
What a $10M SaaS company pays
The scenario: $10M of annual revenue, an average invoice of $500, about 1,667 invoices a month, registered and filing quarterly in 20 states, with 80% of revenue in those states.
| Larger company | Includes filing | Year, our arithmetic |
|---|---|---|
| Avalara Core Compliance + SST, if you qualify | Yes | $13,980 |
| Stripe Tax Complete, $1,000 tier plus 60 extra filings | Yes | $15,300 |
| Avalara Core Compliance | Yes | $15,980 |
| Stripe Tax Basic, no-code | No | $40,000 |
Basic becomes the expensive option, because 0.5% of $8M in registered states is $40,000 and filing is still not included. Stripe Complete's $1,000 tier covers the invoice count, and the 80 quarterly filings exceed its 20 by 60. The $1,500 tier costs more on this mix, because its extra 12 filings save less than its higher fee.
The two filing plans land $680 apart, in Stripe's favor, unless the company qualifies for Avalara's SST path, which then wins by $1,320. At this size the deciding factors are integrations, filing frequency and how many states are SST members, not the sticker.
Where the percentage overtakes the flat fee
Stripe Tax Basic's 0.5% equals Avalara Core Compliance's annual per-state fee once a state brings in about $159,800 of taxable sales a year, our division. Below that per-state volume, the percentage is cheaper for calculation; above it, the flat fee is. A SaaS company with many small states stays on the cheaper side of that line for longer than one with a few big ones.
Filing frequency moves the Stripe Complete totals more than revenue does. A state that switches you to monthly filing triples that state's filing count, which pushes Stripe Complete into overage at $55 a filing, while Avalara's per-state price includes the filings. Check each state's assigned frequency before modeling.
Integrations and fit for SaaS
Stripe Tax is native to Stripe Billing, Checkout, Invoicing and Payment Links, so a company billing in Stripe turns it on without a connector. Its API version works with any processor. Stripe says it calculates tax on 700+ product and service types, collects in 100+ countries and supports filings in 90+ countries through partners.
Avalara's Select plans connect to a listed set of systems, including Stripe, QuickBooks Online, Shopify and WooCommerce, while Custom opens all of the 1,400+ signed partner integrations Avalara says it has. AvaTax covers 12,000+ US tax jurisdictions, and Select also supports Canadian GST/HST, PST and QST. A company on an ERP such as NetSuite or SAP, which are not on the Select list, is pointed to Custom, which is quote-only.
Avalara offers one protection that Stripe's pricing pages do not list: as a certified service provider for Streamlined Sales Tax, it takes on liability for calculation errors in participating SST states for qualifying sellers. For a controller worried about audits in many small states, that shift of liability is worth pricing in.
Outside the US
Stripe Tax Complete charges extra for registrations and filings abroad: a non-US registration adds $150, and EU filings run from $45 for a monthly return for EU-based sellers to $445 for a quarterly or OSS return when fiscal representation is needed. A US SaaS company registered for EU OSS should add those lines to the Stripe total.
Avalara serves customers in 75+ countries for VAT, GST and e-invoicing, but those services sit outside the Select plans and need a quote. A company with real non-US tax obligations gets a published price only from Stripe, which makes Stripe easier to budget even when it is not cheaper.
Which should you choose?
Choose Stripe Tax Basic if you bill in Stripe, are registered in a few states with modest sales in each, and file returns yourself. Choose Stripe Tax Complete if you bill in Stripe, want one vendor for calculation and filing, and sell abroad. The Stripe Tax pricing page covers every tier and overage, and the billing side is in Stripe Billing pricing.
Choose Avalara Core Compliance if you file in many states, bill outside Stripe or through an ERP, or want SST liability protection. The plan detail is in Avalara pricing and the product view in the Avalara review, with its directory entry at Avalara on Toolradar.

How this was compared
We read Stripe's Tax pricing page and its pricing help article, and Avalara's pricing and sales tax plans pages, on October 21, 2026, and multiplied only printed prices. The scenario inputs, revenue, average invoice, states, share of revenue in those states and quarterly filing, are our assumptions and are stated with each table. Stripe totals use the cheapest tier plus printed overages; Avalara totals use the annual per-state price. Registration fees, refunds and tax on the 0.5% base are left out. The Toolradar figures were read on its tax software statistics page the same day. Louis Corneloup, who founded Toolradar and Dupple, edited this page. Our method is at how we rate, and sourcing rules are in the editorial policy.
FAQ
Is Stripe Tax or Avalara cheaper for a SaaS company?

Does Stripe Tax file sales tax returns?
Only on Tax Complete. Tax Basic calculates and collects tax but does not register or file. Tax Complete includes a set number of registrations and filings per tier, done by Stripe in the US, Canada and EU non-Union OSS and through partners elsewhere, with per-filing fees above the limit.
Can Avalara work with Stripe Billing?
Yes. Stripe is on Avalara's list of supported integrations for the Core Compliance and Core Compliance + SST plans. A company that bills in Stripe can use Avalara for calculation and filing instead of Stripe Tax, which makes sense when it files in many states.
When does Avalara's per-state price beat Stripe's 0.5%?
When a state brings in more than about $159,800 of taxable sales a year, by our division of Avalara's annual per-state fee by 0.5%. Below that, Stripe Tax Basic costs less for calculation, but it still leaves filing to you, so compare against your own filing cost too.
