Avalara Review 2026
Whether Avalara's published sales tax plans fit a finance team, which ledgers get that rate, and when a priced alternative wins.
Avalara is worth it in 2026 for a US company under $50 million in revenue that files in several states and bills through a system on the published connector list. Core Compliance is $799 per state a year, and that rate buys calculation, filing, and notice handling together. The catch is the connector list: NetSuite, SAP, and Sage Intacct are not on it, so those stacks move to a Custom quote with no sticker price.
If you want a fee you can multiply by returns instead of states, Numeral is the alternative to price first. The full state-count grid sits in our Avalara pricing guide.
Key factsBest for: Multi-state US sellers on a listed connector who want…
- Published per-state sales tax plans under the page's revenue label, with a Custom tier past that list.
- Published plans: Under 50 million in annual revenue
- Free plan: None listed on the sales tax pricing page
- Core billing: A yearly or monthly rate for each state
- Registration: A separate fee for each location
Pros
- AvaTax covers more than 12,000 US jurisdictions, and Managed Returns files, remits, and handles notices in the same contract.
- A five-state company on yearly Core can budget $3,995 before the call if the connector is on the list.
- On the SST plan, Avalara takes liability for calculation errors in participating states, and only where you qualify.
Cons
- NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics, and Sage Intacct are off the connector list, so those ledgers start on a Custom quote.
- The August 19, 2026 post sets a 200,000 US transaction cap and prints no price above it, leaving the overage unpriced.
- No free trial is listed, and registration is $403 per location on top of the plan, so a new state costs extra.

Avalara is the name a controller hears first for sales tax, and the 2026 price card is what makes the name budgetable.
The printed rate applies only when your ledger sits on the short connector list, so a NetSuite or Sage Intacct company leaves the scoping call with a Custom quote that cannot be checked against the page.
Toolradar data: the software directory we run tracks 41 tax software tools as of October 16, 2026, on its tax software ranking.
That shelf mixes sales tax engines with consumer filing products, so treat the count as the directory's tax category.
The profiles for Avalara, Anrok, and Sovos are the ones that match this decision.
How we compared: every price below was read on the vendor's own page on October 16, 2026.
The five-state totals are our multiplication of those rates for a company already registered in five states. Nothing here is a hands-on test. Where a vendor prints no dollar figure, the review says so.
State-by-state tables live in the pricing guide, and the wider field is in the sales tax software ranking.
What is Avalara?
Avalara sells tax compliance software, and the buy for a mid-market finance team is Avalara Select: two published plans for companies under the revenue label on the pricing page.
Both plans bundle AvaTax and Managed Returns, so calculation and filing sit in one contract, which is wasted spend if your staff already prepares the returns.
AvaTax, the calculation engine, covers more than 12,000 US sales and use tax jurisdictions according to Avalara, which is the coverage that replaces a rate spreadsheet.
The pricing FAQ also puts Canadian GST/HST, PST, and QST on Select, so selling into Canada does not by itself force Custom.
Exemption certificates are included on both plans, and nexus monitoring across all 50 states warns you as activity nears a threshold without filing the registration.
Custom, the third tier, has no list price, so a larger, multi-entity, or unusual filer cannot budget it from the page.
Consumer use tax, property tax, excise, VAT, e-invoicing, and 1099 and W-9 work live on that tier. Information returns are a separate product, so price them from the Tax1099 review and the 1099 software ranking.
How Avalara works
The purchase starts as a conversation, not a cart, because Avalara's pricing page sends buyers to a specialist who scopes states, volume, and systems.
There is no self-serve checkout and no free trial on that page, so the budget has to be approved without a sandbox.
After the connection is live, AvaTax returns a rate for the order from the billing or ecommerce system, which keeps the invoice off a stale table.
Managed Returns then prepares the state return, files it, and sends the tax, so the close team reviews a file instead of building it. Avalara describes an Aviator step that pulls data from more than one system and flags exceptions before the file goes out.
Notice mail is part of Managed Returns, so a state letter is meant to land with Avalara rather than in a controller's inbox.
A ledger off the Core list, volume above the cap in the August 19, 2026 Select post, or a failed SST volunteer test changes the invoice.
Those answers live in the contract, so the figure you show a CFO holds only when the order form repeats it.
Avalara key features
Avalara pricing
Budget the yearly Core rate if you are under the revenue label, because the page calls that yearly figure a 15% saving against paying month by month. Prices checked October 16, 2026 on Avalara's sales tax pricing page.
The SST plan is the lower per-state rate for companies that qualify. Both published plans are labeled for annual revenue under $50 million, so a company above that label is off the card before anyone counts states.
Custom is quote-only, so a multi-entity or unusual filer has no number before the call.
Sales Tax Registration is $403 per location and License Guidance is as low as $119, and neither sits inside the plan rate, so a new state is a separate invoice.
Five states, already registered, is the scenario, and the totals below assume registration is done.
Yearly Core is five times the yearly rate, $3,995, which a controller can defend before the call if the connector is listed. Monthly Core across twelve months is $4,740, so the yearly bill saves $745 when cash can cover the annual invoice.
The SST yearly total at five states is $3,495 if you qualify, the only published way to pay less without dropping a state, and registration, the tax, and any volume charge sit outside these totals.
Avalara's August 19, 2026 Select post adds two terms the pricing page does not print.
Core has a three-state minimum per filing entity on that post, and the SST plan has none, so a one-state Core seller should not assume a one-state invoice. Both plans cap US volume at 200,000 transactions, counted in total rather than per state, and the post prints no price above the cap, so the overage waits for the contract.
Avalara's pricing page says you pay for states where you are obligated to collect, and that volume, integrations, and state count move the quote, so get the minimum in writing, and the pricing guide runs the one, three, ten, and 25-state cases.
The lower SST rate is not automatic: state-funded calculation, filing, and remittance apply in participating states for qualifying volunteer sellers, and standard pricing still applies elsewhere and where you fail the tests.
Those tests include less than $50,000 of property and less than $50,000 of payroll in the state, so a warehouse or local payroll there knocks you back to the standard rate.
California, New York, Texas, and Florida are not on the SST list Avalara publishes, so nexus in those states pays the plan rate.
On the same five-state footprint, using each vendor's own rate, Anrok Starter is $100 per market a month, and each registered US state is a market, so five markets are $6,000 a year.
That is higher than yearly Core when your connector is on Avalara's list.
Numeral Professional is $75 per return and $150 per registration. Five states filed monthly are 60 returns, or $4,500, and filed quarterly they are 20 returns, or $1,500, so the calendar sets the bill.
That Numeral total is filings only, because the page publishes no calculation rate, and a team that still needs an engine has not replaced Avalara.
TaxJar shows Professional at $99 a month beside the order selector, which is $1,188 a year before extra AutoFile credits, a lower bill only when those credits cover the returns.
Vertex and Sovos publish no list price, so an ERP buyer is comparing a quote with Avalara's sticker.

Avalara pros and cons
What we like
- AvaTax covers more than 12,000 US jurisdictions, and Managed Returns files, remits, and handles notices in the same contract.
- A five-state company on yearly Core can budget $3,995 before the call if the connector is on the list.
- On the SST plan, Avalara takes liability for calculation errors in participating states, and only where you qualify.
What could be better
- NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics, and Sage Intacct are off the connector list, so those ledgers start on a Custom quote.
- The August 19, 2026 post sets a 200,000 US transaction cap and prints no price above it, leaving the overage unpriced.
- No free trial is listed, and registration is $403 per location on top of the plan, so a new state costs extra.
Who Avalara is for
Avalara fits a US company under the revenue label, on QuickBooks, Shopify, Stripe, or Amazon, with nexus in several states and a close team that wants filing off its plate. The yearly rate can go in the budget before the sales call.
SST eligibility is the next question, because the lower plan and the liability shift apply only where you qualify, and failing the volunteer tests means standard pricing in those states.
Skip the published plans if the ledger is NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics, or Sage Intacct.
Those names are off the Core connector list, and Avalara routes them to Custom or an API conversation, so the sticker becomes a quote.
Read the NetSuite review and the Sage Intacct review for the ledger side, and NetSuite pricing if the ERP quote is the larger number.
A QuickBooks Online company can use the printed rate, because QuickBooks Online is on the list.
Skip Avalara when you file in one or two states and staff can prepare the returns, because you would pay for filing you do not need.
Numeral's per-return fee or TaxJar's monthly plan can be the smaller bill, and the sales tax ranking lines them up. Also skip it if US volume will pass the 200,000 transaction cap, since the overage is not on the card.
A company above the revenue label is already off the card.
Nexus and SST eligibility depend on your facts, so confirm both with a tax adviser and get the Avalara order form in writing before you sign.

The bottom line
Buy Avalara when the connector is on the list, the state count is real, and filing and notices sit in the same contract as the rate. A five-state QuickBooks or Shopify company can budget the yearly Core total before the call.
Ask two questions in that call: whether the August Select post's three-state floor and transaction cap are in your order, and which of your states actually qualify for SST funding.
The accounting software ranking is the ledger decision next to this one.
Choose Numeral when the job is returns and you can live without a published calculation rate, because then the return fee is the whole price.
Choose Anrok when a flat market fee that includes calculation is worth more than Avalara's lower state rate, and TaxJar when a trial and a small credit bundle match a modest order count. Choose Vertex or Sovos when the stack is an ERP and a quote is acceptable.
QuickBooks versus NetSuite is the fork that decides whether you even see Avalara's published rate.
