Avalara Pricing 2026: What Each Plan Costs by State Count
Avalara charges $799 per state a year on Core Compliance, or $699 on the SST plan, with a three-state minimum. See totals for 1, 3, 10 and 25 states, October 2026.

Avalara's sales tax plans cost $799 per state a year on Core Compliance, or $699 per state a year on Core Compliance plus SST Services, verified on Avalara's pricing pages on October 10, 2026. Core has a three-state minimum, set in Avalara's August 19, 2026 Select post, so a seller in one state pays for three. For a 10-state seller billed annually, the cheapest Avalara option is $6,990 a year if the business qualifies for the SST plan, and $7,990 on Core.
Several guides still describe Avalara as quote-only. Its pages now publish per-state rates for two plans, and the only quote-only tier is for businesses with $50 million or more in revenue. What remains to negotiate is the state count, the billing term and whether your business qualifies for the cheaper plan.
Toolradar data: Toolradar, the software directory we run, ranks 40 tax software tools in its October 2026 list, and 11 of them (28%) have a free plan. Avalara's pricing pages list no free trial and no free plan, so its budget starts with a per-state fee. The tax software ranking is the list behind that count.
At a glance
| Plan | Price, October 2026 | Billing | Who it fits | What it leaves out |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Core Compliance | $799 per state per year, or $79 per state per month | Annual or monthly, three-state minimum | Sellers that want calculation, filing and notices in one plan | The lower SST rate, if the business qualifies |
| Core Compliance + SST Services | $699 per state per year, or $69 per state per month | Annual or monthly, no state minimum | Remote sellers with economic nexus in SST states | Coverage beyond 25 states, and a written answer on whether SST states drop off the bill |
| Custom | Quote only | Quoted per business | Businesses with $50 million or more in revenue, and multi-entity groups | Any published rate |
Both Core plans are for businesses under the $50 million revenue line, and Custom starts there. Two services carry their own prices outside the plans. Sales Tax Registration costs $403 per location, and License Guidance is as low as $119. Avalara's pricing page lists the per-state rates above, so model the cheapest plan first.
What each plan includes
Core Compliance bundles calculation, filing and notices, and its minimum is the catch. The plan covers AvaTax calculation across more than 12,000 U.S. sales and use tax jurisdictions, Managed Returns for filing and remittance with notice handling, audit readiness support, nexus monitoring across all 50 states, and AvaTax Exemptions. Integrations with ERP, ecommerce and accounting systems are included, and Avalara counts more than 1,400 signed partner integrations. If the ledger is the bigger decision, NetSuite pricing covers that side, and the NetSuite review covers fit. Avalara's August 19, 2026 Select post sets the minimum at three states per filing entity, so a one-state business pays for three.
Core Compliance + SST Services adds state-funded compliance for eligible sellers. It includes everything in Core, plus calculation, filing and remittance at no cost in up to 25 states for qualifying sellers, audit liaison support, and one SST identification number for registration across participating states. Avalara says the SST plan costs less per state because the economics differ in participating SST states for qualifying sellers. The plan has no state minimum.
Custom is for businesses with $50 million or more in revenue. It covers the full product range, multi-entity management, consolidated reporting, customized workflows and a dedicated support tier with live chat and a 1-hour response time. Avalara publishes no price for it.
What the per-state model costs
Avalara charges per state, so the total is the state count times the rate. On Core Compliance billed annually, a 10-state seller pays 10 × $799 = $7,990 a year. The table runs the same arithmetic for four state counts, on both plans and both billing terms.
| States | Core, annual | Core, monthly | SST plan, annual | SST plan, monthly |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $2,397 (three-state minimum) | $2,844 | $699 | $828 |
| 3 | $2,397 | $2,844 | $2,097 | $2,484 |
| 10 | $7,990 | $9,480 | $6,990 | $8,280 |
| 25 | $19,975 | $23,700 | $17,475 | $20,700 |
Totals are our multiplication of Avalara's published rates by the state count. They exclude registration, license guidance, the sales tax itself and any transaction tier Avalara sets by quote. The SST column charges the list rate in every state, because Avalara's pages do not say whether the fee falls away in SST states. Twenty-five states is the cap for the state-funded services.
Annual billing saves $149 per state on Core and $129 per state on the SST plan. That is close to the 15% annual saving Avalara lists, and it is worth taking if your state count is stable for the year.
The three-state minimum is the number most small sellers miss. A one-state seller on Core pays $2,397 a year, the same as a three-state seller. On the SST plan, that same state costs far less, a gap of $1,698 a year if the business qualifies.
Volume is the other lever, and Avalara prices it privately. Its AvaTax FAQ says pricing depends on tax-calculation transactions per year, where one API call or one invoice counts as one transaction however many lines it has, and that plans sit in annual tiers. Avalara's pricing FAQ adds that cost varies with the products bought, the number of integrated business applications, monthly transaction volume, the number of states and SST enrollment. The per-state rate is a starting point, not a final quote. If payables are the bigger line, AP automation pricing compared prices 10 payables tools side by side.
How the alternatives compare on published prices
Avalara has two rivals with public rates, and they price differently, so the table puts each one on a 10-state footing where that is possible.
| Option | Published price | Basis | Free trial on its pricing page | Cost for 10 states a year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Avalara Core Compliance | $799 per state per year | Per state, three-state minimum | None listed | $7,990 |
| Avalara SST plan | $699 per state per year | Per state, eligible sellers | None listed | $6,990 |
| Anrok Starter | $100 per market per month | Per market, where each registered US state is a market | None listed | $12,000 |
| TaxJar Starter | $39 per month | Order volume, with 2 free AutoFile credits a year | 30 days | Not comparable per state |
Anrok is cheaper than Avalara Core for one state and more expensive from two states up. Its FAQ counts each US state where you are registered as its own market, so a seller registered in 10 states is in 10 markets. One market at $100 a month is $1,200 a year, against Avalara Core's $2,397 minimum. Two markets reach $2,400, slightly above that minimum. The arithmetic assumes the monthly rate runs for all twelve months. Anrok's Starter also includes filing and remittance in the per-market fee, so both sides include filing.
TaxJar is a different product. Its Starter plan costs $39 a month and Professional $99 a month, priced by order volume and by filing credits, so it cannot be set against a per-state fee. Starter includes 2 free AutoFile credits a year, and each extra credit costs $50. Its flex fees move a business up a tier in a busy month and return it to its plan the next month, and annual billing saves 10% or more. Toolradar tracks both Anrok and Avalara as tools.
Is Avalara worth it?
Avalara is worth it for a multi-state seller that wants filing and notices handled. Managed Returns files and remits in each state and handles notices, the work that otherwise means logging into every state portal. At 10 states the per-state fee runs from $6,990 to $7,990 a year, and that is the figure to weigh against the staff hours it replaces. For the ledger side, best accounting software ranks the options, and QuickBooks vs NetSuite compares QuickBooks and NetSuite side by side.
It is hard to justify for one or two states on Core. The three-state minimum charges for states you do not sell into. For a single state, Anrok's market fee or TaxJar's Starter plan may cost less, provided you can handle the filings yourself or within TaxJar's included credits. If billing is the bigger cost, best billing software compares the invoicing tools. Compare the total, not the sticker.
Skip Avalara if you only need calculations. Avalara publishes no calculation-only price on the pages we checked, so a company that only wants rates at checkout is buying a bundle that includes filing, as far as the pages show. Ask for a calculation-only quote in writing before you assume it is cheaper. For 1099 filing rather than sales tax, see best 1099 tax software.
Ask for SST eligibility and the per-state rule in writing. The SST plan has the lowest per-state published rate for a remote seller with light physical presence, but Avalara does not say whether the per-state fee disappears in SST states. A written answer decides whether the SST figure in the table is a ceiling or the real bill.
How we priced this
We read Avalara's pricing pages for its sales and use tax plans, its packages and its AvaTax calculation product on October 10, 2026, plus its Select post dated August 19, 2026. TaxJar's and Anrok's pricing pages were read the same day, all in US dollars. Scenario totals multiply the published rates by the state count. They leave out registration, license guidance, sales tax and any tier Avalara sets by quote. The Toolradar count comes from our tax software ranking, updated October 2026. We hold no contract prices, so the quote you receive may differ.
FAQ
How much does Avalara cost in 2026?
Avalara charges $799 per state a year on Core Compliance, or $79 a month per state, and $699 per state a year on Core Compliance plus SST Services, or $69 a month. Custom pricing is quote only for businesses with $50 million or more in revenue. Avalara's pricing pages showed these rates on October 10, 2026, and registration ($403 per location) and license guidance (as low as $119) cost extra.
Is there a free Avalara plan or free trial?
No. None of Avalara's three pricing pages lists a free trial or a free plan. Qualifying SST sellers get state-funded services at no cost in up to 25 states, but that is part of the paid plan, not a free tier. Avalara also says every customer gets a sandbox environment for testing before going live, which is a developer setup. For a trial, TaxJar lists 30 days free, while Anrok's pricing page mentions no trial.
Does Avalara have a minimum?
Yes, on Core Compliance. Avalara's August 19, 2026 Select post sets a three-state minimum per filing entity on the Core rate. The SST plan has no state minimum, so a business with one state on Core pays for three.
Is the SST plan cheaper than Core?
Yes, for qualifying sellers, because it is priced per state a year below the Core rate. Avalara says the SST path covers remote sellers with economic nexus in SST states, with under $50,000 in payroll or property in those states, and sellers already registered in one can convert. Avalara does not say whether the per-state fee falls away in SST states, so get that answer in writing.
How much does AvaTax cost on its own?
Avalara publishes no calculation-only price on the pages we checked. AvaTax calculation sits inside the plans, and its FAQ prices by tax-calculation transactions per year, where one API call or invoice counts as one transaction. Plans are annual tiers, so the per-state rate is a starting point.
How much does Avalara registration cost?
Sales Tax Registration costs $403 per location, and License Guidance is as low as $119, according to Avalara's pricing page. Both sit outside the Core and SST plans. Multiply the registration fee by each location where you must register, and add it to the first-year plan cost.
This page is general information, not tax advice. Sales tax duties differ by state and by product, so confirm which states you must register in with your tax adviser, and get a written Avalara quote before you sign.
