Stripe Tax Pricing 2026: 0.5% per Sale or Tax Complete From $90

Stripe Tax pricing in 2026: Tax Basic at 0.5% or 50 cents per transaction, Tax Complete from $90 a month on a 1-year contract, plus filing overages.

Stripe Tax Pricing 2026: 0.5% per Sale or Tax Complete From $90

Stripe Tax costs 0.5% of each sale on Tax Basic through Stripe's no-code tools, or 50 cents per transaction through the API, and Tax Complete starts at $90 a month on a one-year contract. Basic only calculates and collects tax. Complete adds registrations and filings, with 2 registrations and 4 filings a year on the entry tier, and overage fees above that.

Prices come from Stripe Tax pricing, Stripe's Stripe Tax pricing explainer and its subscription and cancellation terms, read on October 21, 2026. Our analysis: for a SaaS company filing quarterly in five states, the cheapest Tax Complete tier plus filing overages costs $1,960 a year, less than Tax Basic alone at $40,000 of monthly sales. The scenario is costed below.

A sales tax engine, for a finance team, works out the rate on each sale, collects it at checkout and feeds the returns you file with each state.

How Tax Basic charges

Tax Basic is pay as you go, and it bills only where you are registered. Stripe's explainer says fees apply only to transactions in jurisdictions where you hold an active registration. A company registered in three states pays nothing on sales into the other forty-seven, which is fair for a young company and a trap for a growing one: each new registration adds its volume to the bill.

The no-code rate is charged on the whole invoice, tax included. Stripe says the percentage applies to the complete transaction amount, including the sales tax it calculated. On a $1,000 invoice carrying $80 of tax, the fee is $5.40, not $5.00, by our arithmetic. For a controller reconciling the Stripe fee line, that difference shows up every month.

The API route charges per call, not per dollar. A Transaction API call costs 50 cents and comes with 10 Calculation API calls; extra calculations cost 5 cents each. Calculation-only users are charged daily for every call. That makes the API cheaper for high-value invoices and dearer for small baskets: a $40 order and a $4,000 order both cost 50 cents.

Basic files nothing. The plan comparison on Stripe's pricing page shows registrations and filings only on Tax Complete. A Basic customer still needs someone, a tax partner, a filing tool or an accountant, to file each return. That cost belongs in the same budget line.

How Tax Complete charges

Tax Complete is an annual contract billed monthly, deducted from your Stripe balance. Stripe's explainer says the subscription is taken at the start of each billing period and overages after the period ends. The terms add that fees are non-refundable, with no prorated refund if you cancel mid-term, and that cancellation takes effect at the end of the term.

Upgrading restarts the clock. For Stripe Tax, the terms say an upgrade cancels your plan and starts a new one with a fresh annual commitment from your next billing period, and unused entitlements from the old plan lapse. A downgrade waits until your current term ends. Pick the tier for the next twelve months, not the next quarter.

Overages are priced, and they are often cheaper than the next tier. Each tier lists its own rates:

Tier Extra transaction Extra calculation call
$90 $0.50 $0.05
$430 $0.48 $0.05
$1,000 $0.46 $0.05
$1,500 $0.35 $0.04

Registrations and filings have a separate price list. A US registration done by Stripe costs nothing extra inside your allowance and $150 above it. A US or Canadian filing costs nothing extra inside the allowance and $55 above it. Outside the US, registrations run through Stripe's partner Taxually at $150 extra, $300 above your allowance, with higher rates in places like Colombia.

Foreign filings are where Complete gets expensive. A non-EU business that needs a fiscal representative pays $445 extra for each quarterly EU return or OSS return, or $500 above the allowance. Mexico is $945 a filing and Japan $4,745. A US SaaS company adding EU VAT should price those returns before it signs.

What a five-state SaaS company pays

Our analysis: we costed one company on each route, using only Stripe's and TaxJar's printed prices as of October 21, 2026. The company bills through Stripe Billing, is registered in five states, files quarterly in each (20 returns a year), sends 150 invoices a month and has $40,000 a month of invoices, tax included, in those five states. Totals are our arithmetic.

Route Yearly cost Files the returns?
Tax Complete, entry tier, plus 16 extra US filings at $55 $1,960 Yes
Tax Basic, no-code, 0.5% of $480,000 a year $2,400 No
Tax Basic plus TaxJar Starter for filing, monthly billing $3,768 Yes, through TaxJar
Tax Complete, $430 tier, plus 8 extra filings $5,600 Yes

The entry tier with overages wins this case. Complete's entry tier covers the 150 invoices inside its 200-transaction allowance, and the 16 returns above the included four cost $880. Moving up a tier to get 12 filings costs $3,640 more a year to avoid eight overage charges, a poor trade for a company this size. TaxJar's Starter plan, $39 a month on monthly billing with 2 AutoFile credits a year and $50 for each extra, adds $1,368 on top of Basic's fee if each return uses one credit; TaxJar says annual billing saves 10% or more.

The answer flips at lower volume. Basic's no-code fee equals the entry subscription at $18,000 a month of sales in registered states. A company billing $10,000 a month into those states pays $50 a month on Basic, and if an accountant already files its few returns, the subscription buys little.

On the API, the break-even is about 180 transactions a month. At the per-call API price, that matches the entry Complete fee, so a Basic customer near that volume pays as much as Complete without getting any filings. Above that, Complete costs less per transaction even before counting the filings it includes, and the effective price per included transaction falls from 45 cents on the entry tier to 30 cents on the $1,500 tier.

Overages beat upgrades for longer than most teams expect. On transactions alone, the entry tier plus 50-cent overages stays cheaper than the $430 tier until about 880 transactions a month, by our arithmetic. Because an upgrade also restarts the annual contract, a team growing into the next tier should usually ride the overages to renewal.

Is Stripe Tax worth it?

Stripe Tax fits a company whose revenue already runs through Stripe. The no-code route turns on inside Billing, Checkout, Invoicing and Payment Links, and Complete adds threshold monitoring, registrations and US filing in the same dashboard. For a seed-stage SaaS team with one finance person, that removes a vendor and a data feed. Our Stripe Billing pricing breakdown covers the subscription layer it sits on, and the Stripe Billing review covers fit.

It fits less well when sales run through several processors or when filings dominate. The API route works with any processor, but each Transaction API call is a separate charge from the payment itself. A company filing many returns in many states should compare per-state pricing at Avalara and plan pricing at TaxJar, or read TaxJar vs Avalara. SaaS teams expanding market by market can weigh Anrok, and companies that want someone else to be the seller of record should read Paddle vs Stripe.

Toolradar data: Toolradar, the software directory we run, tracks 42 tax software tools as of October 20, 2026, a category that mixes income tax filing with sales tax engines such as Avalara and Anrok. Stripe's own directory page is Stripe. The wider ranking is our sales tax software guide, and the Avalara review and Chargebee vs Stripe Billing cover the two most common neighbors in a Stripe-based finance stack.

Mistakes that inflate the Stripe Tax bill

  • Forgetting the tax inside the base. Basic's percentage fee applies to the invoice including tax, so a high-rate state costs more per dollar of revenue.
  • Upgrading mid-term. A Complete upgrade starts a new annual commitment, and leftover entitlements lapse.
  • Counting registrations you already hold. The allowance covers registrations Stripe files for you; returns are what you pay for every quarter.
  • Adding EU VAT without pricing it. A non-EU seller needing fiscal representation pays hundreds of dollars per foreign return on top of the subscription.
  • Assuming cancellation refunds. Fees are non-refundable for the full term, overages included.

How we compared

We read Stripe's Tax pricing page, its Stripe Tax pricing explainer, its subscription and cancellation terms and TaxJar's pricing page on October 21, 2026, and used only figures printed there. The five-state scenario's inputs (registrations, filing frequency, invoice count and sales) are illustrative; every total is our arithmetic on the printed prices. Stripe charges a local-currency equivalent outside the US, so non-US merchants should check the current price on Stripe's site. How we weigh vendors is on how we rate. FAQ

How much does Stripe Tax cost in 2026?

Tax Basic costs 0.5% of transaction volume through Stripe's no-code tools, or 50 cents per Transaction API call, only where you are registered. Tax Complete costs $90, $430, $1,000 or $1,500 a month on a one-year contract, with registrations and filings included up to each tier's allowance.

What is the difference between Tax Basic and Tax Complete?

Tax Basic calculates and collects tax and charges per use, with no subscription. Tax Complete adds tax registrations and return filings, with the entry tier including 2 registrations and 4 filings a year. Basic users must file returns some other way.

Does Stripe Tax file sales tax returns?

Only on Tax Complete. Stripe files in the US, Canada (federal simplified) and the EU non-Union OSS, and uses partners such as Taxually and TaxJar elsewhere. US filings above your tier's allowance cost $55 each, and foreign filings carry extra fees.

Can I cancel Stripe Tax Complete?

Yes, but the cancellation takes effect at the end of your annual term, and fees are non-refundable with no proration. After the term ends, the account moves to pay-as-you-go pricing. An upgrade, by contrast, starts a new annual commitment.

Is Stripe Tax cheaper than TaxJar?

It depends on volume and filings. In our five-state scenario, Tax Complete's entry tier with filing overages came to $1,960 a year, while Tax Basic plus TaxJar Starter for filing came to $3,768. A small company with low registered-state sales can pay less on Basic alone if its returns are filed elsewhere.

Does Stripe Tax charge on sales in states where I am not registered?

No. Stripe's pricing explainer says Basic fees apply only to transactions in jurisdictions where you have an active tax registration. Complete is different: its monthly subscription is owed for the whole annual term, however your sales are spread.
