TaxJar Pricing 2026: Starter $39 vs Professional $99

TaxJar costs $39 a month on Starter and $99 a month on Professional for up to 200 orders a month, or $419 and $1,069 a year on annual billing. The price then climbs by order tier, filings beyond the included AutoFile credits are billed per return, and state registrations cost $299 each. A small marketplace seller filing quarterly in one state pays $519 a year by our arithmetic; a 1,000-order store filing monthly in three states pays about $6,634.

What each plan includes

Starter is a reporting and filing tool; Professional adds real-time calculation. Starter allows up to 3 data import integrations, such as Shopify, PayPal or QuickBooks Online, where the cart or marketplace already calculates tax at checkout. It includes email support with a guaranteed response time and 2 AutoFile credits a year, released one every six months. TaxJar positions it for new businesses and for sellers on Amazon, Etsy or eBay, where the marketplace collects the tax.

Professional allows up to 10 integrations in total, counting data imports and API connections, and it is the plan the TaxJar API requires, according to the API pricing article. That makes it mandatory for WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Magento or custom checkouts that calculate tax in real time. It adds economic nexus insights, exemption certificate storage, address validation, multi-user access with roles and 4 AutoFile credits a year, one per quarter. Phone support starts at the 1,000-order tier, and a dedicated Customer Success Manager comes with larger tiers.

The decision is rarely about features you might want. If your checkout needs TaxJar to calculate tax, you need Professional, and you pay about 2.5 times the Starter price at the same order count. If a marketplace or your cart handles calculation, Starter covers the reports and filings.

How the order tiers scale

TaxJar prices each plan by monthly order volume, counting sales, refunds and returns. On Professional, each API tax calculation or rate lookup counts as one tenth of an order, so a busy checkout can push you up a tier even before sales grow. Choose the tier that covers your normal month, not your peak.

The gap between the plans narrows as volume rises. At 200 orders, Professional costs about 2.5 times Starter; at 100,000 orders it costs about 1.6 times, by our arithmetic on the monthly prices. High-volume sellers that need the API pay a smaller premium for it in relative terms.

Annual billing is worth it once you know your tier. On Starter 200, twelve monthly payments come to $468, so the annual price saves $49, close to the cost of one extra Starter filing. On Professional 1,000, monthly billing costs $5,988 a year against $4,999 annually, which saves $989.

Flex fees: what a busy month costs

TaxJar does not cut you off or add a penalty when you pass your order limit. Instead it charges a flex fee for that month: the difference between your tier's price and the price of the tier that covers your actual volume, as its flex fee article explains. The next month you return to your own tier.

TaxJar's own example: a Professional 500 customer who processes 750 orders in a month pays a $250 flex fee, the gap between the 1,000-order tier and the 500-order tier. Annual subscribers are invoiced separately for the month they go over. If flex fees start landing in normal months rather than in peak season, move up a tier, because the fees will exceed the saving.

For a seller with a strong holiday quarter, this design favors a lower tier. A Starter seller averaging 400 orders who hits 900 in November and December pays two flex fees of $40 each on monthly pricing, the gap between the 1,000-order and 500-order Starter tiers, rather than paying for the bigger tier all year.

Filing and registration fees

The subscription covers reports; AutoFile filings are where the bill grows. If you file returns yourself, the plan price is the whole cost. If TaxJar files and remits for you, each return uses one credit, and returns beyond the included credits cost $50 on Starter and $55 on Professional, pay as you go.

Count your returns before choosing. One state filing monthly is 12 returns a year; five states filing quarterly is 20. Registration in a new state, if you let TaxJar handle the paperwork, adds $299 per state as a one-time fee.

What three sellers pay a year

Annual billing in every row, using the cheapest mix of included credits, bundles and pay-as-you-go returns. Totals are our arithmetic on TaxJar's printed prices and exclude sales tax and registrations.

For the second seller, buying the 50-filing bundle would cost $450 more than the 25-filing bundle plus 13 single returns. The third seller's filings add about a third to the subscription, which is why the state count often matters as much as the order count.

How TaxJar compares on price

TaxJar charges by order volume; its two best-known rivals charge by state or by bundle. Avalara's Core Compliance plan costs $799 per state a year, or $79 per state a month, with calculation and filing included, according to Avalara's pricing page. Stripe Tax Complete starts at $90 a month on a one-year contract for 200 transactions, 2 registrations and 4 filings a year, per Stripe Tax pricing.

For the first seller above, Starter at $519 a year undercuts both. TaxJar's per-order pricing favors sellers with high volume in few states, while per-state pricing favors sellers with modest volume spread across a handful of states. Is TaxJar worth it?

TaxJar is worth it for online sellers whose main cost driver is filings in a limited number of states, and for marketplace sellers who need clean reports by state. The 30-day trial imports your last 60 days of sales, so you see your real order count and state exposure before choosing a tier.
