Avalara Alternatives in 2026: Sales Tax Software for Less
Eight sales tax tools priced against Avalara's per-state plans, with the filing count where the cheapest option flips.
Short answer: for a five-state seller that files quarterly, Kintsugi and Numeral are the cheapest Avalara alternatives at $1,500 a year each, against $3,995 on Avalara's Core Compliance plan. TaxJar Professional ($2,068) and Stripe Tax Complete ($1,960) also come in under Avalara at that filing pace. The ranking flips when a state moves you to monthly returns: at 60 returns a year, Avalara's flat per-state fee is cheaper than every per-filing tool here.
Key facts8 tools compared: Kintsugi, Numeral, TaxJar, Stripe Tax, TaxCloud, Anrok, Sphere, Zamp
- 8 tools compared: Kintsugi, Numeral, TaxJar, Stripe Tax, TaxCloud, Anrok, Sphere, Zamp
- Numeral (best for: US sellers who want pay-as-you-file pricing with no contract and a tax team on call): Monitoring free; Professional $75 per filing + $150 per registration, month to month; Enterprise custom
- TaxJar (best for: Ecommerce and marketplace sellers with modest order counts who want a monthly plan they can trial first): Starter $39/mo, Professional $99/mo at 200 orders a month; extra AutoFile credits $50 to $55; 30-day trial
- Stripe Tax (best for: Companies already billing through Stripe that want calculation and filing on the same account): Tax Basic 0.5% of volume (no-code); Tax Complete from $90/mo on a one-year contract
Avalara is no longer the quote-only black box many buyers remember. Its pricing page now lists Core Compliance at $799 per state a year, filing included, for businesses under $50M in revenue. That changes the switching math: a per-state fee is cheap for a company that files often, and expensive for one that files four times a year per state.
CFOpresso data: Toolradar, the software directory we run, tracks 1,644 ratings of Avalara across G2, Capterra and Trustpilot, averaging 3.8 out of 5, with the Trustpilot slice at 3.4 (ratings checked September 2026, on Toolradar's Avalara profile). Toolradar's tax software ranking evaluates 42 tax tools; Anrok, one of the alternatives below, averages 4.5 out of 5 there from 308 G2 ratings.
This page is for a controller or finance lead who already runs Avalara, or has a renewal quote in hand, and wants to know what leaving would cost. It is narrower than our best sales tax software ranking, which picks tools by fit. Here every vendor is priced on one scenario, and the methodology below shows the arithmetic. Kintsugi
Sales tax automation priced per action, with a free tier that monitors exposure in the US and 100+ countries.
- Pricing
- Free monitoring plan; Starter $75 per action (filing, registration, amendment); Scale and Premium custom monthly
Best for: Sellers filing quarterly in a handful of states who want no subscription and free nexus monitoring.
Pros
- At 20 quarterly returns a year across five states, Starter totals $1,500, the lowest bill in this scenario.
- The Free plan monitors physical and economic nexus with no credit card, so a team can size its exposure first.
- Kintsugi says it charges no onboarding and no transaction fees, so order growth alone does not raise the bill.
Cons
- Each registration, amendment and back filing is another billable action, so a cleanup year costs more than a normal one.
- Real-time calculation integrations sit in Premium, which is custom priced.
Numeral
Sales tax filing and registration priced per return, with free nexus monitoring and concierge support.
- Pricing
- Monitoring free; Professional $75 per filing + $150 per registration, month to month; Enterprise custom
Best for: US sellers who want pay-as-you-file pricing with no contract and a tax team on call.
Pros
- No contract on Professional, so a company can leave Avalara without signing a new annual commitment.
- Professional covers all US states and jurisdictions, with autofile, autoregister and a virtual mailbox for tax mail.
- Exemption certificate management and AI product classification are included rather than sold as add-ons.
Cons
- At 60 monthly returns a year the per-filing bill reaches $4,500, above Avalara's per-state price.
- Global coverage in 90+ countries and the tax engine API sit in Enterprise, which has no published price.
TaxJar
A sales tax reporting and filing platform priced by monthly order tier, with filing sold as AutoFile credits.
- Pricing
- Starter $39/mo, Professional $99/mo at 200 orders a month; extra AutoFile credits $50 to $55; 30-day trial
Best for: Ecommerce and marketplace sellers with modest order counts who want a monthly plan they can trial first.
Pros
- A free 30-day trial lets a team run real orders through it before cancelling Avalara.
- Professional includes a dedicated onboarding contact and Customer Success Manager, useful during a migration.
- Flex fees move you to a higher order tier for a busy month and back afterwards, with no permanent upgrade.
Cons
- Starter includes only 2 AutoFile credits a year, so a five-state quarterly filer buys 18 more.
- TaxJar positions real-time calculation on Professional, so Starter suits reporting and filing, not checkout tax.
Stripe Tax
Stripe's tax product: pay-as-you-go calculation, or subscription tiers that bundle registrations and filings.
- Pricing
- Tax Basic 0.5% of volume (no-code); Tax Complete from $90/mo on a one-year contract
Best for: Companies already billing through Stripe that want calculation and filing on the same account.
Pros
- The entry Tax Complete tier includes 200 transactions a month, 2 registrations and 4 filings a year.
- US filing overages are $55 each, so the quarterly scenario totals $1,960 a year.
- Tax Basic needs no subscription for teams that only need calculation and collection.
Cons
- Tax Complete is a one-year contract, a commitment Numeral and Kintsugi do not ask for.
- Transactions above the tier are $0.35 to $0.50 each, so order growth raises the bill.
TaxCloud
A sales tax platform and SST certified provider, priced on an order slider with a separate filing plan.
- Pricing
- Starter and Premium priced by order tier; filing from $39/mo or as low as $20 per filing; 30-day trial
Best for: Remote sellers that qualify for Streamlined Sales Tax and want state-funded filing in SST states.
Pros
- Free sales tax services in 24 SST states for qualifying sellers, covering registration, filing and audit support.
- Annual plans pool the order allotment across the year, which suits seasonal sellers.
- The 30-day trial opens the Premium plan, including the API, with no credit card.
Cons
- The trial excludes filing and registrations, so a migration cannot be tested end to end before paying.
- Base prices sit on a slider by order count, so no single figure can be totalled for this scenario.
Anrok
Sales tax and VAT software built for SaaS and modern commerce, priced per market per month.
- Pricing
- Starter $100 per market per month; Custom quoted for 10+ markets; ecommerce plan custom
Best for: SaaS companies that want calculation, filing and exemption certificates in one per-market fee.
Pros
- Starter bundles real-time calculation, filing and remittance, and exemption certificate management in one price.
- Its G2 average on Toolradar is higher than Avalara's blended rating, a signal worth checking in reference calls.
- Global exposure monitoring covers VAT markets as well as US states.
Cons
- Five markets cost $6,000 a year, more than Avalara's Core plan for the same five states.
- Anrok says additional fees may apply to Starter sellers with high transaction volumes, without a published rate.
Sphere
Global tax compliance priced flat per region, with calculation, registration and filing in each region fee.
- Pricing
- Starter $100 per region per month under 10 regions; Growth custom for 10+ regions
Best for: Teams selling in fewer than 10 US states plus a few countries who want one flat fee per region.
Pros
- Sphere says it charges no implementation fees and no one-off costs.
- Calculation covers up to 50,000 transactions across active regions before per-transaction fees start.
- A region is a US state, the EU via OSS, or a country, so mixed US and VAT footprints price in one unit.
Cons
- At five states the bill matches Anrok at $6,000 a year, above Avalara's Core plan.
- Ten or more regions moves you to Growth, which has no published price.
Zamp
A managed sales tax service with calculation, nexus monitoring, filing and notice management, priced by scoping.
- Pricing
- Free assessment; U.S. and U.S. + Canada plans are quote-only
Best for: Companies with historical exposure or complex taxability that want a done-for-you service quoted on scope.
Pros
- The free tier includes a nexus assessment, a historical liability analysis and a 30-minute tax consultation.
- Notice management is listed as end to end on the U.S. plan.
- The U.S. + Canada plan adds GST, HST, PST and QST filing on the same account.
Cons
- No published price, so the switch cannot be costed until a sales call.
- Zamp argues against flat per-state pricing, which makes a like-for-like quote against Avalara harder to request.
What it is
An Avalara alternative is sales tax software that calculates tax at checkout or on the invoice, tracks where you have crossed economic nexus, prepares and files returns, and remits the tax to each state. Vendors price it in four ways: per state per year (Avalara), per region per month (Anrok, Sphere), per filing or action (Numeral, Kintsugi), or a monthly plan with filing credits (TaxJar, Stripe Tax). The model matters more than the headline number, because each one punishes a different filing pattern.
Why it matters
The filing calendar decides the winner, and most comparisons skip it. A state sets your filing frequency from your sales volume there, so the same five states can mean 20 returns a year or 60. A tool that bills per return triples in cost between those two calendars, while Avalara's per-state price stays put, so the same vendor can be the cheapest or the dearest option depending on where you sell.
Three switching traps change the answer. First, registrations are priced separately almost everywhere: Avalara charges $403 per location, Numeral $150 per registration, Stripe $150 above the plan's allowance. Second, monthly plans with filing credits look cheap until overages land: TaxJar Starter includes two AutoFile credits a year. Third, Avalara's SST plan can make Avalara itself cheaper than you think, because 25 states fund its services for qualifying remote sellers.
Key features to look for
Pricing
How we ranked: one scenario for every vendor. A US seller is already registered in five states, processes about 200 orders a month, and files quarterly in each state, which is 20 returns a year. We also show the same seller at 60 returns a year, for states that require monthly filing. Registrations, payroll tax and card processing are excluded from every total. A vendor enters the cost ranking only when its own page gives a price we can total. We checked each pricing page on 17 October 2026.
At 20 returns a year: Kintsugi and Numeral charge per return, so $1,500 each. TaxJar Starter is $468 in plan fees plus 18 extra credits at $50, which is $1,368, but it is a reporting and filing plan; Professional with calculation is $1,188 plus 16 credits at $55, or $2,068. Stripe Tax Complete is $1,080 a year plus 16 filings at $55, or $1,960. Avalara Core Compliance is $799 times five states, or $3,995, and $3,495 on the SST plan. Anrok and Sphere charge a flat monthly fee per state, or $6,000 for five.
At 60 returns a year the order changes. Kintsugi and Numeral rise to $4,500, TaxJar Professional to $4,268, Stripe Tax Complete to $4,160, while Avalara stays at its per-state price. The crossover is 53 returns: below it, the per-return tools cost less than Avalara Core; above it, Avalara costs less. TaxCloud prices its base plan on an order slider and Zamp is quote-only, so neither has a total. TaxCloud's pricing page quotes a customer who says it paid around $30k for TaxCloud against a six-figure Avalara bill; treat that as a testimonial the vendor chose to publish, not as a list price you can expect.
Companies above $50M in revenue fall into Avalara's Custom plan, which has no list price, so this scenario does not apply to them. If the sales tax decision is part of a wider finance stack change, see our best accounting software list and our NetSuite review. Cross-check two of the vendors on Toolradar: Anrok and Stripe.

| Kintsugi Starter | $75 per action | Registrations, filings, amendments and deregistrations, notice handling and 24/7 live chat, in the US and Canada |
| Numeral Professional | $75 per filing + $150 per registration | All US states, autofile, autoregister, exemption certificates and a tax mail inbox; month to month |

| TaxCloud Starter and Premium | Priced by order tier | Filing plans from $39/mo; free services in 24 SST states for qualifying sellers |
| Anrok Starter | $100 per market per month | Calculation, filing and remittance, exemption certificates and global exposure monitoring |
| Sphere Starter | $100 per region per month | Under 10 regions; monitoring, registration, filing and up to 50,000 transactions of calculation |
| Zamp U.S. | Contact sales | Calculation, nexus monitoring and registration, filing and remittance, and notice management |
The bottom line
For a five-state seller filing quarterly, Kintsugi and Numeral are the cheapest exits from Avalara at $1,500 a year, and Numeral asks for no contract. Stripe Tax Complete is the natural pick for a company already billing through Stripe, and TaxJar Professional suits ecommerce teams that want a trial and a success manager during the move.
Stay on Avalara if most of your states file monthly, or if you qualify for its SST plan: the per-state price then beats every per-filing tool here. Anrok and Sphere cost more than Avalara at five states, and earn their place when calculation, VAT markets and exemption certificates matter more than the bill. Zamp and TaxCloud need a quote or a slider reading before they can be compared.
