TL;DR

Short answer: Recurly is the cheapest Chargebee alternative we can total at $50,000 of monthly billings. Its Starter plan costs $249 a month plus 0.9% of billings above the first $40,000, which comes to $339 a month or $4,068 a year. Stripe Billing is next at $350 a month on its 0.7% pay-as-you-go rate, while Chargebee's own Flow plan costs $400 a month at 0.80%. Maxio's flat fee is the most expensive of the four at this size, but it is the cheapest of the four from $85,571 a month up to its $100,000 Grow limit.

  • Maxio (best for: Finance-led SaaS teams billing above $85,571 a month, up to the limit of its Grow plan): Grow $599/mo for up to $100k of monthly billings, unlimited users; Scale is quote-only above that

Chargebee's Flow plan has no flat monthly price on its pricing page. It runs on a calculator of monthly invoicing volume, and at this volume that calculator gives $400 a month.

The question is whether anyone undercuts that number, and by how much.

CFOpresso data: Toolradar, the software directory we run, lists 6 direct alternatives to Chargebee as of October 2026.

We checked the pricing pages of eight alternatives on 10 October 2026. Three publish a total we can compute at this volume, one publishes a rate that bundles payments and tax, and four publish no price or rate.

This page costs the alternatives for one scenario.

It is narrower than our best billing software guide, which ranks platforms by fit. Here the only question is what the same billing volume costs on each vendor's own price list.

Payables tools are a separate question, covered in our best AP automation software list.

1 Recurly logo
Top Pick

Recurly

A subscription billing platform with a flat base fee, a band of free billings and retention add-ons sold separately.

Pricing
Starter $249/mo + 0.9% of billing above the first $40K a month; Engage and RevRec are priced on request

Best for: Subscription firms billing $35,571 to $55,500 a month, the band where it is the lowest priced here.

Pros

  • The first $40K of billings each month carries no percentage fee, so a month at the threshold costs only the base fee.
  • Starter includes automated subscription billing and flexible plans.
  • Starter comes with a 90-day free trial, so a team can test the billing setup before it pays.

Cons

  • The 0.9% rate sits above Stripe's 0.7%, so Recurly costs more than Stripe once billings pass $55,500 a month.
  • Engage and RevRec, the retention and revenue add-ons, are priced on request from a stated floor.
2 Stripe Billing logo

Stripe Billing

Subscription and invoice billing on the same account as Stripe Payments, with failed-payment recovery included.

Pricing
0.7% of billing volume, pay as you go, no base fee; one-year plans from $620/mo up to $100K volume

Best for: Teams already running payments through Stripe that want a percentage fee with no base charge.

Pros

  • The 0.7% has no base fee, so a $10,000 month costs $70 and a $20,000 month costs $140.
  • Stripe Billing is cheaper than Chargebee Flow at every volume below $198,000 a month, using both vendors' own price lists.
  • Smart Retries, automatic reminders for overdue payments and a Stripe-hosted customer portal are included in the product.

Cons

  • Card processing is extra at 2.9% plus 30¢ per successful card charge, and ACH is 0.8% with a $5.00 cap.
  • Advanced usage-based billing runs through Metronome, a separate Stripe product that is priced on contact.
3 Maxio logo

Maxio

A finance-owned billing and revenue platform with one flat monthly price on its entry plan and collections built in.

Pricing
Grow $599/mo for up to $100k of monthly billings, unlimited users; Scale is quote-only above that

Best for: Finance-led SaaS teams billing above $85,571 a month, up to the limit of its Grow plan.

Pros

  • Unlimited users at no extra charge, according to its pricing FAQ, so a larger finance team adds no seat cost.
  • At $90,000 a month the flat fee is the lowest of the four billing tools priced here.
  • Collections, dunning and usage-based billing are listed as included on every plan.

Cons

  • At this volume the flat fee is the highest of the priced alternatives, so it only pays off as billings grow.
  • The fee is listed by the month, but Maxio says its default agreements are paid annually.
4 Orb logo

Orb

A usage-based billing platform that prices on billings and events, with finance integrations on every plan.

Pricing
Core, Advanced and Enterprise are all custom pricing; Advanced and Enterprise add a platform fee

Best for: Usage-based and hybrid companies that want billing built on events and will take a sales-led price.

Pros

  • Core lists real-time event ingestion, real-time alerting and hybrid and usage-based billing.
  • Advanced adds a data warehouse sync, Salesforce and NetSuite integrations and customer hierarchy.
  • Its pricing FAQ names billings and events as its two metrics, so a usage-heavy company can model its bill from both.

Cons

  • No plan has a published price, so a total at this volume needs a written quote.
  • The platform fee on Advanced and Enterprise has no amount shown on the pricing page.
5 Zuora logo

Zuora

An enterprise subscription and billing platform sold with quoting, global price lists and revenue tools.

Pricing
No list price on its pricing page; plans are sold after a conversation with sales

Best for: Large enterprises with complex quote-to-cash, global price lists and multi-currency pricing.

Pros

  • Global price lists and multi-currency pricing are part of the core product, according to its site.
  • Proration rules handle mid-cycle changes, and promotions can carry free trials and promo codes.
  • CPQ quotes pull the right price books, approvals and terms automatically.

Cons

  • Toolradar's G2 and Capterra average for Zuora is 3.9 out of 5 across 365 ratings, the lowest of the six alternatives it lists (September 2026).
  • With no price on its site, no cost at this volume can be totalled, so Zuora cannot be ranked on cost.
6 Lago logo

Lago

A billing engine for usage, credits and hybrid plans, deployable on-prem, in a private cloud or in Lago's cloud.

Pricing
Premium is quote-only on cloud or self-hosted deployments; no open-source price is listed

Best for: Engineering-led teams that want open-source or self-hosted billing and can run the infrastructure themselves.

Pros

  • Deployment can run on-prem or in a VPC, so billing data can stay inside your own environment.
  • Its product pages cover usage metering, billing and invoicing, credits and spend control, and quotes and order forms.
  • Role-based access control is listed as a feature.

Cons

  • Premium pricing is quote-only, and the caps on billing entities and data pipeline volume are not stated.
  • Self-hosting moves hosting and maintenance cost onto your team, and Lago publishes no estimate of that cost.
7 FastSpring logo

FastSpring

A merchant-of-record commerce platform for software and digital goods, with payments, subscriptions and tax in one provider.

Pricing
Revenue-share model with rates set in a sales conversation and no minimum transaction volume

Best for: Software sellers that want one provider for payments, tax and subscriptions and accept a revenue share.

Pros

  • Its comparison table lists payment processing, international processing, subscription management, fraud prevention and tax remittance as included.
  • There is no minimum transaction volume, so smaller sellers are not held to one.
  • Discounted rates apply to ACH and wire transfer transactions.

Cons

  • No rate is published, so a billing cost at this volume cannot be totalled from its site.
  • Because tax and payments sit inside the fee, the cost is not a like-for-like comparison with billing-only tools.
8 Paddle logo

Paddle

A merchant-of-record platform that takes payments, handles global tax and covers chargebacks on each checkout.

Pricing
5% + 50¢ per Checkout transaction, all-in, with no monthly fees; custom pricing for high volume

Best for: Software sellers who want one fee for payments, tax, fraud and chargebacks, not a billing tool.

Pros

  • The fee covers global tax and regulatory compliance, fraud protection and chargebacks in a single rate.
  • The pricing page lists no monthly fees.
  • Custom pricing is offered for high-volume businesses with more complex needs.

Cons

  • At $50K of monthly billings, the 5% alone is $2,500 a month before the 50¢ per transaction.
  • It replaces the payment and tax stack as well as billing, so it is a different purchase from billing software.

What it is

A Chargebee alternative is a subscription billing platform that stores plans and prices, sends invoices on a schedule, collects payments through a gateway, retries failed charges and reports recurring revenue. Vendors charge for it in one of three ways: a percentage of billing volume, a flat monthly fee, or both.

Chargebee's Flow calculator offers either a percentage alone or a $99 base with a lower percentage. Our revenue recognition guide covers the accounting layer that some of these platforms sell as a separate product.

Why it matters

The bill is the first thing to check, because Chargebee's price rises with every dollar of invoicing. The Flow calculator starts at 0.80% of monthly invoicing volume, and its flat-fee option only pays off above $66,000 a month.

A flat monthly fee or a lower percentage can change that picture, as it does for AP software in our Tipalti alternatives page, but only if you compare every option at the same volume.

Three pricing traps change the answer.

Recurly's 0.9% applies only to billings above the first $40,000 each month, so its Starter plan is cheapest for a company in one band and costs more than Stripe once billings pass $55,500 a month. Stripe's 0.7% covers billing transactions but not card processing, which Stripe charges separately at 2.9% plus 30¢ per successful card charge.

Maxio's $599 is listed by the month, but its default agreements are paid annually, so the real commitment is a full year.

Key features to look for

Base fee versus percentage
Recurly charges a flat base fee. Stripe and Chargebee's first option charge only a percentage. Chargebee's second option adds a $99 base with a lower rate.
Free billing band
Recurly's first $40,000 of monthly billings carries no percentage fee, a free band that the other percentage-based vendors do not offer.
Flat fee for the top band
Maxio's Grow plan charges one flat fee for up to $100,000 of monthly billings, with unlimited users and collections included.
Usage events
Chargebee's Flow plan includes 100 million usage events a month. Orb and Lago price on events, and Stripe's advanced usage billing is sold through Metronome.
Card processing
Every total here excludes card and ACH processing. Stripe Payments charges 2.9% plus 30¢ per card charge, and the other billing tools connect to a payment gateway that charges its own fees.

Pricing

How we ranked: one scenario for every vendor. A US company bills $50,000 a month in subscriptions, billed monthly, in US dollars, with no usage metering and no one-off invoices. A vendor enters the cost ranking only when its published pricing gives a total for that volume.

Card processing is excluded from every total, because each billing tool here passes card payments to a processor or gateway.

We checked each pricing page on 10 October 2026.

Chargebee's pricing page prices its Flow plan with a calculator on monthly invoicing volume: 0.80% with no base fee, or $99 a month plus 0.65%, breaking even at $66,000.

Stripe's Billing pricing page lists pay as you go at 0.7% of billing volume, and a one-year plan billed monthly from $620. Recurly's pricing page lists Starter at $249 a month plus 0.9% of billing volume, with the first $40,000 of monthly billings at no charge.

Maxio's pricing page lists Grow at $599 a month for up to $100,000 of monthly billings.

Orb's pricing page lists custom pricing on all three plans.

Zuora's pricing page gives no price. Lago's pricing page quotes Premium on request. FastSpring's pricing page describes a revenue share with rates set in sales.

Paddle's pricing page lists 5% plus 50¢ per Checkout transaction.

For sales tax software on its own, see our Avalara pricing guide.

NetSuite is on Toolradar's list of Chargebee alternatives, and we leave it out: it is an ERP, and billing is one module inside a larger purchase.

Our NetSuite review covers that product, and our NetSuite pricing guide covers its price.

Mistakes to avoid
×Comparing headline rates. Chargebee's 0.80% and Stripe's 0.7% look close, but the gap is 0.1 points, or $50 a month at this volume. The flat-fee option changes that answer above $66,000.
×Ignoring the free band. Recurly's first $40K a month carries no percentage fee, which is why it wins at $50K and loses to Stripe above $55,500.
×Treating a monthly price as the commitment. Check the billing term on every quote before you compare totals.
×Leaving out card processing. Every total here excludes it, and Stripe Payments adds 2.9% plus 30¢ per card charge on top of billing.
Expert tips
→Ask each vendor to price your last three months of billings, not an average, because Recurly's monthly threshold and Stripe's pay-monthly bands apply to each month's total.
→Check usage billing before you compare totals. Chargebee's Flow includes 100 million usage events a month, while Stripe's advanced usage billing runs through Metronome, which is priced on contact.
→Model the crossover volume, not only today's. Maxio's flat fee beats Stripe above $85,571 a month, so a company that expects to pass that line within a year should ask Maxio for a quote now.

The bottom line

For $50,000 of monthly billings, Recurly costs the least we can total: $4,068 a year. Stripe Billing comes within $132 a year of it at $4,200, with no base fee, and it is the simpler choice for a team already running payments through Stripe.

Chargebee's Flow plan costs $4,800 a year at the same volume, so both cheaper options save money on billing alone, before card processing, which each billing tool adds on top.

Maxio becomes the answer as billings grow.

Its flat fee costs $2,388 a year more than Chargebee at the same volume, but it beats Stripe above $85,571 a month and stays flat up to its Grow limit. Orb, Zuora, Lago and FastSpring publish no price we can total, so ask each one for a written quote at the same volume before you decide.

Paddle charges 5% plus 50¢ per transaction for payments, tax and fraud together, which is a different purchase from billing software. For the wider field, see our best billing software list.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest Chargebee alternative in 2026?

At $50,000 of monthly billings, Recurly's Starter plan is the cheapest we can total: $249 a month plus 0.9% of billings above the first $40,000, or $339 a month. Stripe Billing comes next at $350 a month on its 0.7% pay-as-you-go rate. Both were checked on the vendors' pricing pages on 10 October 2026, and both exclude card processing.

How much does Chargebee cost?

Chargebee's Flow plan has no flat monthly price. Its calculator offers 0.80% of monthly invoicing volume with no base fee, or $99 a month plus 0.65%, and the two break even at $66,000 a month. At this volume the lower option is $400 a month, or $4,800 a year.

Is there a free Chargebee alternative?

Nothing here bills this volume for free. Recurly's Starter plan includes a 90-day free trial. Lago offers an open-source deployment, but it publishes no hosting cost, so that cost cannot be totalled against the others.

Where does the cheapest option change?

Stripe Billing is cheapest below $35,571 a month. Recurly is cheapest from $35,571 to $55,500. Stripe is cheapest again from $55,500 to $85,571, and Maxio's flat fee is cheapest from $85,571 up to its Grow limit. Chargebee's Flow plan is never the cheapest below $198,000 a month, because Stripe undercuts it at every volume under that.

Does Stripe Billing include card processing?

No. The 0.7% covers billing transactions, while card payments are charged separately at 2.9% plus 30¢ per successful card charge, and ACH at 0.8% with a $5.00 cap. The other billing tools connect to a payment gateway, so processing is an extra cost for each billing tool here.

How much does Maxio cost?

Grow is listed at $599 a month for up to $100,000 of monthly billings, with unlimited users and collections included. Maxio says its default agreements are paid annually, with monthly and quarterly payments as a premium option. Scale, above that limit, is quote-only.
