Stripe Billing Review 2026: Fees, Limits and When to Outgrow It

What Stripe Billing charges at four monthly volumes, which costs sit outside the 0.7%, and the volume where Maxio, Recurly or Chargebee start to cost less.

TL;DR

Stripe Billing is worth it for most subscription companies billing under roughly $88,571 a month: it costs 0.7% of billing volume with no base fee, so $50,000 of monthly billings costs $350 a month. Above that line, the $620 a month contract tier is cheaper, and the subscription logic, dunning and customer portal come included either way. Prices were checked on Stripe's US pricing pages on 17 October 2026.

The catch is that the 0.7% is not the whole Stripe bill: card processing, revenue recognition and one-off invoices are priced separately, and processing alone runs several times the billing fee, so budget them as their own lines. A finance-led team near the top of the first contract band should price Maxio, whose flat fee stays the same up to that cap.

Stripe Billing is the default choice for SaaS companies that already take payments through Stripe, and for most of them the default is right. The billing fee is small, the subscription features are deep, and a developer can set up plans, trials and proration through one API. The questions a CFO should ask are narrower: what does the full Stripe bill look like, and at what volume does a dedicated billing platform start to cost less?

Toolradar data: Toolradar, the software directory we run, tracks 142 G2 reviews of Stripe Billing averaging 4.4 out of 5, and ranks it the 14th most-listed alternative among 350 e-commerce tools in its October 2026 data, on its Stripe Billing profile. Methodology: every price below was read on Stripe's own US pricing pages on 17 October 2026, and the cost scenarios are our arithmetic on those prices. Nothing here comes from hands-on use of the product.

What is Stripe Billing?

Stripe Billing is Stripe's subscription and recurring billing product. It stores plans and prices, creates invoices on a schedule, collects payment, retries failed charges and lets customers manage their own billing details.

Stripe's pricing page says the billing fee covers billing transactions processed on and off Stripe, so it can bill payments taken through another processor. It sits alongside separately priced Stripe products: Payments for processing, Invoicing for one-off invoices, Tax for sales tax and Revenue Recognition for revenue schedules.

How Stripe Billing works

A team sets up products and prices in the Dashboard, through Payment Links or Checkout with no code, or through the API for a custom integration. Each billing period Stripe generates the invoice, charges the saved payment method and, if the charge fails, runs Smart Retries, which Stripe says use machine learning to retry at the best time.

Automatic reminders go out for missed or overdue payments, and up to three recovery and retention automations can set custom retry policies by customer segment. Usage-based billing runs on the Meters API with up to 100M events a month included; more advanced usage pricing and negotiated contracts move to Metronome, a Stripe product sold separately.

Stripe Billing key features

Subscriptions and schedulesEssential
Recurring plans, trials, proration and multiphase subscription schedules that queue an upgrade or price change for a future date. Quotes let sales send an estimate before the subscription starts. For a SaaS company this covers most packaging changes without code.
Failed payment recoveryEssential
Smart Retries, automatic reminders and up to three recovery automations are included in the billing fee. Involuntary churn from expired cards is often a bigger revenue leak than the fee itself, so this is where the 0.7% earns its keep.
Customer portal
A Stripe-hosted page where customers update cards, download invoices and change plans. It is included, with a $10 a month charge only if you want it on your own domain.
Invoice auto-reconciliation
Recurring invoices paid by ACH credit or wire are matched automatically. That helps a controller whose larger customers pay by bank transfer rather than card.
Usage-based billing
Meters API usage billing includes up to 100M events a month. Multidimensional rates, negotiated contracts and marketplace billing go through Metronome, which Stripe prices on contact.
Revenue Recognition (add-on)
Automates revenue schedules on Stripe transactions, with period close and reopen controls. It is a separate subscription priced by payment volume, so add it to the budget if the auditors need deferred revenue out of Stripe.

Stripe Billing pricing

Stripe Billing has two price paths. Pay as you go is 0.7% of billing volume with no recurring fee, covering billing transactions processed on and off Stripe and excluding one-off invoices. Pay monthly is an annual contract paid monthly: $620 a month covers up to $100,000 of monthly billing volume, $1,500 up to $250,000, $2,950 up to $500,000 and $5,750 up to $1,000,000, with 0.67% on volume above each cap and custom pricing beyond that. Source: Stripe Billing pricing, read 17 October 2026.

Our scenarios (billing fee only): $20,000 of monthly billings costs $140 a month on pay as you go; $50,000 costs $350; $100,000 costs $700, against the entry contract tier's flat fee; $250,000 costs $1,750, against $1,500 on contract. The two paths cross at $88,571 a month, so a company below that line should stay on pay as you go and keep the freedom to leave.

The bigger lines sit elsewhere. Stripe Payments charges 2.9% plus 30 cents per successful card charge and 0.8% per ACH direct debit, capped at $5. For a company billing $50K a month as 500 card charges of $100, processing is $1,600 a month, so the billing fee is about 18% of the combined bill. Revenue Recognition starts at $25 a month up to $10,000 of payment volume, then $190 a month for the next band on an annual plan. One-off invoices go through Stripe Invoicing at 0.4% (Starter) or 0.5% (Plus) per paid invoice. Sales tax is another product, covered in our Avalara alternatives page.

Who Stripe Billing is for

Stripe Billing fits a SaaS or subscription company that already processes cards on Stripe, bills in a few standard plans, and has engineers who can work with an API. It is especially strong for product-led companies with self-serve signups, where Checkout, the customer portal and failed payment recovery do work a finance team would otherwise staff. Below the contract crossover, the no-contract 0.7% is hard to beat.

It is a weaker fit for a finance-led company with sales-negotiated contracts, multi-entity billing or complex revenue schedules, where a dedicated platform gives the controller more control without engineering tickets. Those teams should read our best billing software ranking, our Chargebee alternatives cost comparison and our revenue recognition guide before committing to a Stripe contract tier.

The bottom line

Stripe Billing is the right default for a subscription company on Stripe Payments that bills below the contract crossover: 0.7% with no contract, and the recovery tools included. Move to the entry contract tier once you are reliably above that line, and budget Revenue Recognition and card processing as separate lines, because processing will be the larger number.

Look past Stripe when the shape of billing, not the fee, becomes the problem. Maxio's flat fee wins at the top of the $100K band for finance-led teams, Recurly's free band wins between roughly $35,000 and $55,000, Chargebee fits teams that want gateway choice, and Zuora is the enterprise step for complex quote to cash. Read our Zuora review for that end of the market, and pair any billing choice with a ledger from our best accounting software list or our NetSuite review. Compare all five on Toolradar: Maxio, Recurly, Chargebee and Zuora.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Stripe Billing cost in 2026?

Stripe Billing costs 0.7% of billing volume on pay as you go, with no recurring fee, or on one-year contract tiers paid monthly, starting with a flat fee for the first band of volume and 0.67% above each cap. Prices were read on Stripe's US pricing page on 17 October 2026. Card processing is charged separately.

Is Stripe Billing worth it?

For a subscription company already on Stripe Payments, yes in most cases. The fee stays at 0.7% with no base charge, and failed payment recovery and a customer portal are included. It is less compelling for finance-led companies with negotiated contracts or multi-entity billing, where a dedicated billing platform gives the controller more control.

Does Stripe Billing include card processing fees?

No. Stripe Payments charges 2.9% plus 30 cents per successful card charge and 0.8% per ACH direct debit, capped at $5, on top of the billing fee. At $50,000 a month in 500 card charges, processing is $1,600 a month, several times the billing fee.

When should you switch from pay as you go to a Stripe Billing contract?

Above $88,571 of monthly billing volume, the entry contract tier costs less than 0.7%. The contract runs for one year, so switch only when volume is reliably above that line, not after one strong month.

What are the best Stripe Billing alternatives?

Maxio charges a flat $599 a month on Grow, Recurly's Starter plan charges $249 a month plus 0.9% above the first $40,000, and Chargebee's Flow plan charges 0.80% or $99 plus 0.65%. Zuora is quote-only and aimed at enterprises. Which one costs less depends on your monthly volume.
