Recurly add-ons Revenue teams that need recognition or retention offers inside the billing tool RevRec from $850 a month, Engage from $1,600 a month, both billed annually RevRec: automated contract modifications, SSP automation, allocations, multi-GAAP; Engage: propensity-to-churn model, personalized offers, A/B testing

A subscription billing platform, for this audience, prices the plan, raises the invoice, collects the card, retries the failures and hands revenue to the ledger. Both products do that. The difference is in how they charge for it and in what sits beside the invoice.

How the fee models differ, and where they cross

Chargebee charges a percentage of what you invoice, with an optional base fee that lowers the rate. At $50,000 a month, Flow costs $400 with no base or $424 with the base, so the base fee is a loss until invoicing passes the crossover, which Chargebee puts at $66K. Chargebee does not state on its pricing page whether the percentage applies to invoiced or collected volume, so ask before you model a business with heavy write-offs.

Recurly charges a fixed fee plus a percentage, with the first $40K of monthly billings exempt. At $50,000 a month, Starter costs the base fee plus 0.9% of the $10,000 above the exemption, or $339. That beats both Chargebee lines by $61 to $85 a month at that size. The exemption is what makes Recurly cheap for small volumes, and it stops mattering once volume is several times larger.

Our arithmetic puts the breakeven at about $84,000 a month against Chargebee's base-fee line and about $111,000 against the no-base line. At $84,000, Recurly Starter and Chargebee Flow with the base fee both cost $645 a month; at $111,000, Recurly Starter and Chargebee's no-base line both cost $888. Above those volumes, every extra dollar of billing costs 0.9% at Recurly and 0.65% at Chargebee, so the gap widens in Chargebee's favor. Below them, Recurly's exemption wins. The best billing software roundup puts both beside Maxio, Zuora and Stripe Billing, and the Stripe Billing review covers the 0.7% pay-as-you-go alternative that undercuts both percentages but adds no base-fee tier of its own.

A $150,000 month, priced both ways

Our scenario: a software company invoicing $150,000 a month on recurring plans, one legal entity, no usage-based component beyond what Flow includes. Totals multiply each vendor's published rates and exclude payment processing, taxes and add-ons.

Line Chargebee Flow, no base Chargebee Flow, with base Recurly Starter
Base fee None $99 $249
Percentage 0.80% of $150,000, or $1,200 0.65% of $150,000, or $975 0.9% of $110,000 above the exemption, or $990
Monthly total $1,200 $1,074 $1,239
Annual total $14,400 $12,888 $14,868

Chargebee with the base fee is $165 a month cheaper than Recurly Starter at this volume, or $1,980 a year. Double the volume to $300,000 and the gap grows to $540 a month, because Recurly's 0.9% is a quarter higher than Chargebee's 0.65%. At that size Recurly would point you to All-Access, which it prices at under 1% of volume on an annual contract with a $1M billing volume minimum; the exact rate is quoted, so the comparison above $1M is a negotiation, not a table.

Churn, dunning and recovery

Recurly wins retention tooling at the entry price. Starter ships static churn-prevention tools and one dunning campaign; All-Access adds intelligent churn prevention, multiple dunning campaigns and AI agents; and Engage, from $1,600 a month billed annually, adds a propensity-to-churn model, personalized cancel-save, upsell and cross-sell offers and A/B testing. A company whose finance team tracks involuntary churn as a line item gets more levers here, and pays for the best of them separately.

Chargebee bundles growth tooling as a separate product, free at the entry level. Chargebee Growth Starter is free for Billing customers and includes pricing tables, hosted checkout, a self-serve portal and no-code cancel pages; Growth Enterprise is priced on active subscribers and adds multi-brand experiments, an AI offer builder and trial-conversion and upsell experiments. Flow itself includes one growth experiment. The honest read: Chargebee gives a small team more free retention surface, and Recurly gives a larger team deeper paid retention analytics. The best AR automation software guide covers the collections side once the invoice is past due.

Revenue recognition and quoting

Both sell revenue recognition as a paid add-on, and only Recurly prints a starting price. Recurly RevRec starts at $850 a month billed annually, priced on billing volume, with automated contract modifications, SSP automation, rules-driven allocations and multi-GAAP compliance. Chargebee RevRec Performance and Enterprise are quoted after a demo, with automated recognition, multi-currency, GAAP reports and journal entry mapping on Performance, and multi-source integration, advanced revenue rules and expense amortization on Enterprise. A controller who needs ASC 606 inside the billing tool should budget Recurly's floor and get Chargebee's quote before comparing. The standalone options are in best revenue recognition software.

Chargebee has a quoting layer; Recurly's pricing page does not list one. Chargebee CPQ Lite is free for the first 50 quotes for Billing customers, and full CPQ is quoted, adding quoting controls, multi-product and multi-year ramped quotes and approval workflows. A sales-led company with ramped contracts gets that inside Chargebee; on Recurly it lives in the CRM.

Usage-based pricing is a Chargebee strength at the entry tier. Flow includes usage ingestion with 100M usage events a month and real-time limits, and Enterprise can add up to 500M events. Recurly's pricing page lists flexible plans and advanced plans, pricing and promotions on All-Access, but no event allowance, so a metered product should confirm Recurly's usage model with sales before signing. For the enterprise end of this market, the Zuora review covers the product both vendors are usually compared against.

Entities, payments and the ledger

Multi-entity is an Enterprise feature at Chargebee and an All-Access feature at Recurly. Chargebee Enterprise adds multi-entity management, account hierarchy and contract terms; Recurly All-Access adds multicurrency, SSO and payments orchestration. A group with two billing entities therefore leaves both entry plans, and at Recurly it also has to clear the $1M billing volume minimum.

Payment reach favors Recurly on paper. Starter lists 10 or more payment methods and 20 or more gateways, and All-Access adds orchestration across them. Chargebee's pricing page does not list a gateway count, so a company that routes cards through two processors should ask. Neither page prices processing: card fees come from the gateway, and they dwarf the billing fee on most invoices, so model them from the processor's schedule, not from either billing page. If the real problem is collecting the invoice rather than raising it, the HighRadius review covers the AR side.

Who should pick which

Pick Chargebee when monthly invoicing is above about $111,000, when usage-based pricing is part of the model, or when sales needs quotes and ramps inside the billing tool. Start on Flow with no base fee, switch the base fee on past the crossover, and price Enterprise when the second entity arrives.

Pick Recurly when monthly billing is under about $84,000, when involuntary churn is the metric the board asks about, or when you want a 90-day trial before any commitment. Starter is the plan until volume approaches the All-Access minimum, and RevRec is the published floor for recognition. The full Recurly fee model, with scenarios at three volumes, is in Recurly pricing 2026.

Skip both if the stack is already on Stripe and the volume is small: Stripe Billing's 0.7% pay-as-you-go rate with no base fee is the cheaper line for a company under the Recurly exemption; Stripe Billing pricing 2026 prices it, and the Chargebee alternatives page runs the shortlist. If the whole finance stack is being chosen at once, best finance stack for Series A places billing beside the ledger and the card.

How we compared

We read Chargebee's pricing page, including the Billing, CPQ, RevRec and Growth sections, and Recurly's pricing page, including the Starter, All-Access, Engage and RevRec sections, on October 17, 2026. The breakeven volumes and the $150,000 scenario are our arithmetic from published rates, not vendor quotes; they exclude payment processing, taxes and negotiated All-Access or Enterprise terms. Louis Corneloup, founder of Toolradar and Dupple, edited the verdict. Re-check both pricing pages before you sign.
