Zoho Books Review 2026
Six plans from a free tier to $275 a month, what each one adds for a finance team, and where the user caps and add-on fees change the bill.
Zoho Books is worth it in 2026 for a company that wants multi-currency, inventory and purchase orders on a ledger that costs less than $500 a year. Professional covers 5 users for $40 a month billed annually, or a quarter more month to month, verified on Zoho's US pricing page on October 17, 2026.
The free plan stays free for as long as revenue stays under $50K a year, and it includes bank reconciliation, 1,000 invoices a year and 1099 filing.
Budgets, cash flow forecasting and basic revenue recognition sit on Premium at $60 a month billed annually, which is still below the list price of QuickBooks Online Essentials.
The catch is that every plan caps users, extra seats cost a few dollars a month each, and advanced inventory and sales channels start on Elite at $120 a month billed annually.
Key factsBest for: Single-entity companies that need multi-currency, inventory…
- Six-plan cloud ledger with a revenue-gated free tier, cheap extra seats and inventory from the Professional plan.
- Vendor: Zoho Corporation
- Cheapest paid plan: $15/mo billed annually
- Free trial: 14 days
- Alternatives covered: QuickBooks Online, Xero, FreshBooks, Wave
Pros
- Professional carries multi-currency, inventory, purchase orders and project profitability for 5 users at a price below QuickBooks Online Essentials.
- Extra users cost a few dollars a month each on annual billing, so a growing team adds seats instead of jumping tiers.
- The free plan includes bank reconciliation, 1,000 invoices a year and 1099 filing for one user plus an accountant.
Cons
- Every plan caps users, from 3 on Standard to 15 on Ultimate, before the seat add-on applies.
- Bank feeds, sales tax tracking and the API are not on the free plan, so a real business starts at Standard.
- Advanced inventory, warehouses and Etsy, eBay and Amazon channels wait until Elite, two tiers above Professional.
Zoho BooksBuy Professional when the posting team fits in five seats and you need multi-currency or inventory today. Buy Premium when the controller wants budgets, a vendor portal and fixed assets inside the same ledger instead of a spreadsheet beside it.
Do not buy Elite or Ultimate for the user count alone, because an extra Professional or Premium seat costs far less than the jump between tiers.

What is Zoho Books?
Zoho Books is the cloud general ledger inside Zoho's finance suite, sold on six plans that step from a free tier to Ultimate. It handles invoices, quotes, bills, purchase orders, banking, inventory, projects and reporting in one file, with Zoho's Zia assistant layered on for natural-language queries and anomaly detection.
It is a single-entity ledger. A group that needs intercompany eliminations and consolidated statements is in ERP territory, and the NetSuite review and the QuickBooks vs NetSuite comparison cover that jump.
The plan ladder is the product. Free covers one user plus an accountant. Standard adds bank feeds, sales tax tracking and the API for 3 users. Professional adds sales and purchase orders, multi-currency, inventory and project profitability for 5 users.
Premium adds budgets, cash flow forecasting, fixed assets, basic revenue recognition and a vendor portal for 10 users. Elite adds advanced inventory, warehouses and online sales channels, and Ultimate adds advanced analytics with 50+ prebuilt visualizations for 15 users.
How Zoho Books works
A new organization starts as a chart of accounts, a bank connection and an invite to the accountant, who does not consume a paid seat on any plan. Receipts come in through autoscan, 50 a month on the free tier, and bank reconciliation matches them against the feed from Standard up.
Invoicing runs on every plan, with annual caps that rise from 1,000 invoices on Free to 5,000 on Standard, 10,000 on Professional, 25,000 on Premium and 100,000 on Elite and Ultimate. A company that bills more than that in a year is on the wrong plan, and the cap is annual, so a seasonal spike does not force an upgrade on its own.
The close still lives in this file. Transaction period locking, custom reports and journal templates arrive on Standard, approvals and retainers on Professional, and budgets and forecasting on Premium.
A 13-week cash view is a Premium feature, not a planning model, so a board pack still needs an FP&A tool from the AI FP&A ranking.
Payables beyond bill entry run through the BillPay add-on at $59 a month, which includes 100 ACH vendor payments, or through a dedicated tool from the AP automation ranking.

Zoho Books pricing
List prices on Zoho Books pricing, read October 17, 2026, are per organization per month. Billed annually, Standard is $15, Professional $40, Premium $60, Elite $120 and Ultimate $240.
Month to month, the same plans are $20, $50, $70, $150 and $275. Free is $0 while annual revenue stays under $50K, and every paid plan has a 14-day trial with no contract.
Add-ons on annual billing are extra users at $2.50 a user a month, document autoscans at $8 per 50 scans a month, locations at $10 a location a month, expense claims at $7 per active user a month, and BillPay at $59 a month with 100 ACH payments included.
A 5-user company with inventory pays $480 a year on Professional billed annually. The same company pays $1,680 a year at list on QuickBooks Online Plus and $1,164 on Xero Established, both before introductory discounts. A 10-user company with budgets pays $720 a year on Premium billed annually.
FreshBooks Plus is $43 a month list for 50 billable clients, with team members at $11 a user, and Wave Pro is $190 a year with bank import, both read the same day.
Neither includes inventory or multi-currency, so they are alternatives for a services company, not for the Professional buyer.

Who Zoho Books is for
Zoho Books fits a single-entity company that wants multi-currency, inventory or purchase orders at a price below the QuickBooks and Xero tiers that carry them, and a company already on Zoho CRM, Zoho Expense or Zoho Payroll that wants one vendor.
Professional is the honest default for a product company with a posting team of five or fewer. Premium is the honest default when the controller wants budgets, forecasting and fixed assets inside the ledger and the team is ten or fewer.
Skip it when the accountant lives in QuickBooks and will charge for the switch. The QuickBooks Online review covers the plan a firm-led company should buy instead.
A pre-revenue startup can run on the free plan and should read how much bookkeeping costs for startups before paying anyone for it.
A group with several entities, intercompany flows or a consolidation close is past this product.
The best accounting software ranking and the free ERP software guide cover the next tier, and AI for accounting covers what Zia-style assistants do across vendors.

The bottom line
Zoho Books earns the subscription when the company is one entity, the posting team fits a plan cap plus a few cheap seats, and the features it needs sit on Professional or Premium. Price Professional for inventory and multi-currency, Premium for budgets, and treat Elite and Ultimate as product-company tiers rather than user-count upgrades.
Choose QuickBooks Online when the accountant will not leave it, Xero when headcount will outrun every cap, FreshBooks when the business bills clients by the hour, and Wave when free invoicing is the whole requirement.
