Best AI Accounting Software in 2026: AI-Native ERPs for Finance Teams

Eight ledgers and accounting agents compared on what the AI does inside the books, the controls around it and the prices each vendor prints, with a first-year cost table.

TL;DR

Short answer: Rillet is the best AI-native ERP in 2026 for a venture-backed or mid-market team leaving NetSuite or QuickBooks, and Campfire is the closest rival for multi-entity groups. Both quote every deal. If you want a printed price, Digits runs from $65 a month and Puzzle from $30, and QuickBooks Online now puts Intuit Intelligence agents on its existing plans. Prices checked on vendor pages on 21 October 2026.

The split that matters is between AI built into the general ledger and AI bolted onto one. Rillet, Campfire, Digits, Puzzle and Light record the books themselves; Numeric can sit on top of your ERP or replace it, and Basis works for accounting firms rather than in-house teams.

Every accounting vendor now sells AI, so the useful question for a CFO or controller is narrower: does the AI post and reconcile entries in the ledger, or does it summarise a ledger someone else keeps? The first kind changes how many people the close needs. The second saves a few hours of report writing. This page ranks eight products on that line, then on the controls an auditor will ask about, then on price.

CFOpresso data: Toolradar, the software directory Dupple runs, evaluated 280 accounting tools for its October 2026 accounting ranking, and none of the eight products below makes its top 10, which leans toward bill pay, cards and tax filing. Of the eight on this page, three print a full price list (Digits, Puzzle and QuickBooks Online) and five sell only through a demo, so most of the AI-native ERP market still cannot be priced without a sales call.

Methodology: we read each vendor's pricing, product and comparison pages on 21 October 2026 and ranked on three criteria in order: how much ledger work the AI performs (categorisation, reconciliation, accruals, flux commentary), the controls around it (audit trail, approval thresholds, multi-entity), and price transparency. There is no hands-on testing behind this list. Our general approach is on how we rate.

  • CPA-led team migrates historical data and sits in on the first close; Rillet lists go-live at 4 to 6 weeks
  • Native Stripe, Salesforce, HubSpot, Rippling, Avalara and Ramp integrations, with 99% Stripe auto-match claimed by Rillet

Cons

  • No subscription price on the site, so budget talks start with a demo

An AI-native ERP whose Ember agents run continuously on the books, built on Campfire's own accounting foundation model.

Pricing
Quote-only; Campfire prints no price

  • 1,200+ granular permissions, 100+ native integrations and SOC 1 and SOC 2 reports

Cons

  • No published pricing at all, including for small teams
  • The 3 to 10 days faster close is Campfire's marketing claim, so ask for references at your size
3 Digits logo

Digits

An AI-native ledger that categorises and reconciles around the clock, with an open API and MCP server on every plan.

  • Multi-entity runs through an integration, and subledgers are reserved for Scale

Numeric

A close and cash platform that also sells a full ERP replacement, with the Prism in-app AI surfacing items to review.

Pricing
Quote-only by module (close, cash, billing and revenue, ERP replacement); no printed price

Best for: Controllers on NetSuite who want AI close automation now and the option to replace the ERP later

Pros

  • Cash Management matches up to 95% of bank transactions automatically and parses bank statements with AI
  • Billing and Revenue module ingests usage events and handles ASC 606 allocations and contract modifications
  • Start with one module on your current ERP instead of a full migration

Cons

  • Replacing NetSuite with Numeric is a full migration, a bigger project than adding a close module
  • Every module is priced on a quote, so a multi-module stack is hard to budget early
6 Light logo

Light

An agentic ERP with one ledger for every entity, bill, expense and reconciliation agents, and native payables.

Pricing
Quote-only; Light prints no price and sets it in each order confirmation

Best for: International groups with entities in several countries and currencies that want one ledger

Pros

  • Intercompany entries eliminate as they post, and local GAAP, IFRS and management books run from one ledger
  • Bill, Expense and Reconciliation agents act within written policies, checked by a read-only internal audit agent
  • Pays vendors in 80+ countries; Light lists go-live in as little as 4 weeks

Cons

  • Worked examples on its site are in euros, so check US sales tax and 1099 support in the demo
  • No public price, and its terms bill in the currency set in each order
7

QuickBooks Online

The incumbent small-business ledger, now with Intuit Intelligence agents for categorisation, reconciliation and anomalies.

Pricing
Simple Start $38/mo, Essentials $85, Plus $140, Advanced $340; monthly, 30-day free trial

Best for: Small businesses and their outside accountants who want AI help without changing ledgers

Pros

  • Plus auto-categorises and verifies transactions, reconciles the books and finds anomalies for up to 5 users
  • Advanced adds Finance AI insights, unlimited classes and locations, and 25 users
  • No annual contract, and almost every outside accountant already works in it

Cons

  • The AI sits on an older ledger, and multi-entity groups are pointed to Intuit Enterprise Suite, a separate product
  • Several agent features are still labelled beta, including chat-based budgeting
8 Basis logo

Basis

AI agents built for accountants that take on long, multi-step close and tax workflows so staff start at review.

Pricing
Quote-only through a demo request; Basis prints no price

Best for: Accounting firms running client accounting services or tax work at volume

Pros

  • Handles long-horizon work such as month-end close for CAS clients and multi-K-1 tax returns
  • Firm customers quoted on its site describe cutting 100-hour returns to 15 to 20 hours
  • Customer quotes come from firms such as UHY and Wiss, so the product is shaped around CAS and tax practices

Cons

  • Sold to accounting firms, not in-house finance teams; a CFO meets it through an outsourced firm
  • No pricing page with figures, and results quoted are customer testimonials

What it is

AI accounting software is a general ledger, or an agent working on one, that categorises transactions, reconciles accounts and drafts entries automatically, then routes exceptions to an accountant for approval before anything posts.

An AI-native ERP goes one step further: the ledger, subledgers, revenue schedules and close checklist live in one system built around those agents, instead of a legacy ERP plus connectors. Rillet, Campfire and Light sell themselves this way. For a wider view of where AI fits in the accounting function, see AI for accounting.

Why it matters

The licence is rarely the biggest number. Rillet's own NetSuite comparison page puts a Rillet implementation at $10,000 to $30,000 over 4 to 6 weeks, against the multi-month projects it attributes to NetSuite; our NetSuite implementation cost guide covers that side. A team that buys an AI-native ERP for the AI and keeps paying a bookkeeper to recategorise transactions has paid twice.

At the small end the trade is different. On monthly billing, a year of Digits Core costs $1,200, Puzzle Complete $1,440 and QuickBooks Online Plus $1,680 by our arithmetic on printed prices, and all three include AI reconciliation or categorisation. The gap is under $500 a year, so the choice should turn on controls and fit, not price. Ask every vendor the same three questions: what posts without a human, what threshold sends an entry for review, and where the audit trail lives.

Key features to look for

AI that posts, not only summarisesEssential
Check whether the agent categorises, matches and drafts journal entries inside the ledger. A chat window that answers questions about your books saves less time than an agent that clears the reconciliation queue.
Review thresholds and audit trailEssential
Campfire lets you set confidence thresholds for what auto-applies, and Light routes entries by amount. Every AI action should be logged, attributed and reversible, or your auditor will treat it as an uncontrolled change.
Revenue recognition and subledgersEssential
SaaS and usage-based companies need ASC 606 schedules built from contracts. Rillet, Campfire and Numeric include revenue automation; Puzzle adds revenue recognition on its Complete plan.
Multi-entity and multi-currency
Groups with subsidiaries need intercompany eliminations and consolidation in one ledger. Rillet, Campfire and Light do this natively; Puzzle handles multi-entity only through an integration.
Implementation ownership
Ask who migrates historical data. Rillet's CPA-led team and Campfire's Migration Agent take that work on, which matters more than any feature if your team is already stretched at month-end.
Open access for other AI tools
Digits ships a developer API and MCP server on every plan, and Rillet connects its Aura AI to Claude, Snowflake and BI tools. That lets your analysts query live books without exports.

Pricing

Methodology: on 21 October 2026 we read the pricing pages of Digits, Puzzle, QuickBooks Online, Rillet and Numeric, Rillet's NetSuite comparison, Light's terms and product pages, and the product pages of Campfire and Basis. First-year totals below are our arithmetic on printed prices (12 times the monthly price). Where a vendor prints no price, we say so and do not estimate.

Billing terms differ, so compare like with like. Every total in the table uses monthly billing. Puzzle also sells yearly billing at 20% off, which brings Complete to $96 a month and Core to $58, and its Starter plan is free for the first 2 months. QuickBooks Online runs month to month with no annual contract and advertises a discount for the first 3 months, which the totals ignore. Digits prints one monthly price per plan.

Read the seat limits before comparing. Puzzle Core covers 5 seats and Complete is unlimited, QuickBooks Plus covers 5 users and Advanced 25, and Digits lists no seat count in its plan table. Toolradar keeps profiles of Digits, Puzzle, Numeric and QuickBooks. Plan-by-plan detail is in our Puzzle review and QuickBooks Online pricing guide.

PlanPriceBest for
Puzzle Starter$360 a year1 seat, 25 lifetime AI credits, cash and accrual books; free for the first 2 months

QuickBooks Online Advanced$4,080 a year25 users, Finance AI insights, unlimited classes and locations

Mistakes to avoid
×Buying an AI-native ERP for the AI alone. If your pain is a slow close on a ledger you otherwise like, a close layer such as Numeric costs less disruption than a migration.
×Comparing a yearly-billed price with a monthly one. Puzzle's yearly rate is 20% lower than its monthly rate, while QuickBooks and Digits print monthly prices.
×Letting agents post without thresholds. Set the amount and confidence level above which a person approves, and test it on one month before you widen it.
Expert tips
→Ask each vendor to run its agents on one closed month of your real data and show which entries needed a human. That is the number that predicts headcount.
→Price the implementation with the licence. Rillet prints its own range; for the others, get the migration scope and fee in writing before you sign.
→Keep your outside accountant in the decision. A ledger your CPA firm cannot work in moves cost to their invoice.

The bottom line

Pick Rillet if you run a SaaS or usage-based business, are leaving NetSuite or QuickBooks, and want revenue recognition and an AI agent layer in one ERP with a CPA-led migration; our Rillet review has the detail. Pick Campfire for multi-entity groups that want tight thresholds on what AI posts, and Light if your entities sit in several countries. Shortlist all three against the incumbents in multi-entity accounting software and NetSuite alternatives.

For smaller teams, Digits and Puzzle give an AI-native ledger at a printed price, and QuickBooks Online is the safe choice when your accountant already lives in it (see QuickBooks vs Sage Intacct for the step up). If you keep your ledger and only want a faster close, Numeric and the tools in best AI for the financial close fit better. What AI changes for the people doing this work is covered in will accounting be replaced by AI.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI accounting software in 2026?

Rillet is the best AI-native ERP for venture-backed and mid-market finance teams leaving NetSuite or QuickBooks, with Campfire as the closest rival for multi-entity groups; both are quote-only. For a printed price, Digits starts at $65 a month and Puzzle at $30 a month, read on their pricing pages on 21 October 2026.

What is an AI-native ERP?

An AI-native ERP is a general ledger and its subledgers built around AI agents that categorise, reconcile and draft entries, instead of a legacy ERP with AI added later. Rillet, Campfire and Light describe themselves this way, and Numeric sells an ERP replacement alongside its close software.

How much does AI accounting software cost?

Printed prices run from $30 a month for Puzzle Starter to $340 a month for QuickBooks Online Advanced, and Digits sits between at $65 to $250 a month. Rillet, Campfire, Light, Numeric and Basis print no price. Rillet's own NetSuite comparison lists its implementation at $10,000 to $30,000.

Does QuickBooks Online have AI?

Yes. QuickBooks Online now includes Intuit Intelligence agents: Plus at $140 a month auto-categorises and verifies transactions, reconciles the books and flags anomalies, and Advanced adds Finance AI insights. Some features, such as chat-based budgeting, are still labelled beta on Intuit's pricing page.

Can AI close the books without an accountant?

No. Every product here routes exceptions and entries above a threshold to a person, and Rillet, Campfire and Light log each AI action in an audit trail. The agents remove categorisation, matching and first-draft accruals; an accountant still approves what posts and signs off the close.

Is Puzzle or Digits cheaper?

Puzzle is cheaper at entry: its Starter plan costs less than half of Digits Essentials. At the mid tier on monthly billing, Digits Core is $1,200 a year and Puzzle Complete $1,440, by our arithmetic. Puzzle's yearly billing cuts its price by 20%, so compare the same billing term.
